you can ride the monster... kinda. however it mostly involves jumpink on thier back and stabing it with ur knife till u can bring out ur big weapon and knock it down. You can also capture small pets useing the capture net on your item bar and then place them inside your room. also if ur new in the game theres 3 rooms you can have as you progress further into the story.

You can't ride the monsters as a battle mount to take on other monsters. BUT... your palico can with small monsters when you've befriended the grimalkynes.

Yes, its my favorite things to do. You can ride them for 5 to 30 seconds tho... would you like it if I was on your back stabbing you in the neck? And when you capture them to be your pets they never want to play, they always sleep in the corner. There is a pig that lets you carry him around (basically it mounts and rides you).
