How important is HR really?
As I've discovered through playing, Hunter Rank may as well mean absolutely nothing, when my friend and I, as Hunter Rank 13, are massively out playing people who are in the upper 50's im curious as to what purpose hunter rank has.

We've been 13 for a reaaaaallly long time at this point, just because we, for some reason, are trying to do literally everything we can do before we continue, to the point where I've got every weapon tree in my chosen main built and upgraded as much as I can, and I have an HR set built the way I want it, at least, at this point. My question is...are we wasting a lot of effort doing this, when we could be getting our hunter ranks higher? I feel a bit left behind when everybody else I met on the game is geting close to the HR100 and we're still 13 after 100 hours.

Your wasting time is different than my wasting time. Do what you want, and if you enjoy it, who cares.

Once You move story ur HR will jump anyways based on amount of stuff You did. And HR is useless I'm HR 231 myself.

Other then the few soft caps you get that give more missions when reached it means nothing after getting it fully uncapped

Tempered monsters (and augments, by extension), are gated behind higher HRs. HR 100 is needed to have access to every quest in the game currently.

No, when you stay at the lower HR, it's because you haven't finished the story. You're actually still accumulating all your HR experience, not losing out on it. When you finish the story, you and your friend may very well jump from HR 15 to HR 25 or even higher because of all the stuff you've done while you were HR locked in story mode.

Content locking, that's about it. HR is significant for content up to 50. There's also a quest..and maybe a Guild background or 5 for hitting 100, but yeah. I'd say go for at least 50 unless T3's and augementing don't interest you, then do what you want lol. I'm HR141 and stopped paying any attention after 100 lol

You unlock a special quest at HR100. At 999 you should get a special title for your guild card.
Then higher the HR and higher the chances that Xeno or Zorah quests will appear.

Fair enough, I was just wondering if we were kind of sitting on our hands at this point, since, theres still so much we haven't really seen yet. Haven't even really killed the first Elder until earlier today, we forgot some optionals that lead up to Kirin.

Glad to hear that our HR will adjust to a proper level once we've completed the story, I was a bit worried about that.

At this point I am hitting a wall, lol we've completed almost everything we can and the person I play with is, for some weird reason, really worried to fight Nergi. Even though I am pretty sure we'd crush him at this point. I just want to actually "progress" lol

HR is only important to access a couple specific quests at the end game; you'll need HR 29 and HR 49 specifically.

That being said, it sounds like you're doing what my brother and I did, just played a bunch before finishing the main plot. Don't fret, when you clear certain main plot points your HR will jump because it's capped at intervals but tracked in the background.

This. As others have said, it's just locked content waiting for you at each quest, but I like having a full set of gear anyway, so I farm and I farm just enjoying my low HR..

Lol always be on your toes. Although Nergi isn't that hard, he can still oneshot you most of the time.
HR is literally just how many hunts you finished. If you completed 2000 hunts against Great Jagras but got carried through the story by your friends you might end up with a very high HR, but very little experience on anything else.
Also HR is locked at certain levels until you finish the story or specific missions (one at HR 29 and another one at HR 49), so when you complete them you will see your HR jump up several levels at once. If you did most optional missions before finishing the story you'll very likely jump from 15 to 29 immediately then from 29 to the 40s.

I am all for getting knocked around while learning how to properly fight him, that's half of the fun of the game to me. It's the first Monster Hunter game I've actually been able to sink a bunch of hours into. Never had the right consoles in the past for it, or didn't really like the idea of playing something like this on a handheld.

Thanks for the quick answers guys :) Appreciate it.

HR is what tells if you can access higher quests or not, but it's growth is controled during story mode. Other than those missions requirements, it's mostly useless.

Every mission you do gets you HR 'exp', and it WILL build up even when you have it locked, so it will usually jump up once you are done with the story and it unlocks the level. Take it as a measure of either how far you are into the story, and after that of how much hunting experience you have.

Dude your HR is capped untill you complete the story, once you finish it ups the cap to 29 and gives you a quest to up the cap to 49, after that it uncapps. i took my time just likeyou and after the credits rolled i found out i was hr 46
