Best element for solo alatreon?
I've been trying with Kjarr dragon glaive and can't seem to power down the nova. I'm playing decently aggressively so I don't think that's an issue.

Use ice against fire starting, use fire against ice starting, and concentrate on breaking the horn in dragon phase. Don't bother with a dragon element weapon because it doesn't do much elemental damage except when he's in dragon phase, and you want to break the horn then anyway.

Alternatively just use your best raw weapon and eat for safeguard. This will give you around 25 minutes to kill him provided you only die to his novas.

Would subbing water for ice work? Kjarr Ice is kinda bad.

Ice is TRASH for Alatreon. It is completely nullified in one of its states, and that is something you cannot have for the elemental checks.
Same goes for fire.

If you're solo, you'll want water, thunder or dragon. All 3 work on all elemental states.

Eh I wouldn't say it's trash as Canta Per Me used kjarr ice DB for several of their runs yesterday and did it in like ~15min on average and also locks it out of ice form after horn break though maybe it's a skill difference.

If you break the horn in the dragon phase then you will never see the alternate phase. That's why it's better to run the element he's weak to in his initial phase. HIs hitzones for dragon are extremely low in both his fire and ice phases, it's better to target the other element instead.

It's definitely possible to solo with any element, but if you want the best chance you'll want to be able to weaken all the Escaton Judgements, not just 2/3.

ice is extremely good since you prevent alatreon from entering ice mode by breaking the horns anyway.

Considering 2/3 of the best elemental weapons against Alatreon cannot hit the horns reliably, eh nah.

Alatreon cycles his elements in predetermined order of Fire -> Dragon -> Ice -> Dragon > Fire etc.* If you break his horn during one of the dragon phases, it removes the next element from the sequence, making it possible for Alatreon to only cycle between Fire -> Dragon -> Fire. This makes Ice really good for soloing as long as you can keep breaking the horns. Mounting makes that easy.

*The order of the elements depends on which of the 2 event quests you are playing. Fire weapons can be just as good if you keep Alatreon on Ice state.

You'll want to change your elemental weapon based on the quest. If he starts in fire, you want to use an ice weapon. If he starts in ice, you want to use a fire weapon. The most important thing if you start with these weapons though is you need to break the horn during dragon phase, this will cause you to skip the elemental phase that you would normally be weak against.

In other words...

Without Horn Break
Ice -> Dragon -> Fire -> Dragon -> Ice

With Horn Break
Ice -> Dragon (Break) -> Ice -> Dragon (Break) -> Ice

I would not suggest Water or Thunder, unless you choose to follow the same strat above with the horn break. If you dont want to use Ice/Fire I'd use Dragon. This is because while Dragon element will always be 2 star against dragon form, a phase which happens 50% of the time, you could end up with Water in a Ice/Dragon phase which would both be 1 star. That said, he "might" spend more time in fire/ice compared to dragon which would make water/thunder comparable, but I havent really checked that yet.

Like I just said, try breaking the horn with Dual Blades or SnS. You'll waste too much time trying.

To be fair Canta probably could kill it with a beginner weapon :o

Mount him when he enters dragon phase, and the ground combo after you knock him down should be enough to break the horn.
