If memory serves (haven't used any personally, but they're hard to miss considering it seems they account for 90% of the mods on NexusMods), they all replace an existing armour pieces/sets. It presumably just works but you'll have to look up the mod to find which set it replaced.

You don't need costume mods because the Kulu Ya Ku helm is already in the game. What else do you need? I like to imagine mine doesn't have eye holes, but a periscope going up the neck. Really helps me get into the fursona.

Careful with outfit mods if you want to play with others. On top of maintenance and quality of MHW online features being a joke ,mods specially those that change your look can cause frequent disconnections if other ppl you play with don't also have them. That being said:
1.Download and unpack contents of the mods you want into nativePC folder of your MHW location.
2.Download and unpack same way mod called MHW Costume Armor (Transmog).
3.Fire up Steam and MHW.
4.Fire up MHW Costume Armor.exe, make sure ur firewall/antivirus leaves it alone or it won't probably work. You can also run it as administrator for safe measure.
5.In the MHW Costume Armor.exe click on Search for MHW Save File Data and Fetch Game Data.
6.Choose armour pieces you want and click on Write Armor.
7.You might have to travel to a new location before ur appearance change but ur look in guild card should change right away.

Completely false, an armor model swap will not cause disconnects at all.

literally any mod goes into your root MHW folder/nativePC.
from there, there are various options.
if it's a style mod for weapons it's probably packed behind a wp folder, if it's a weapon mod folder it will most likely go to a pl folder.
you can even go as far as changing the mod's disignated weapon/armor to be a completely different one by changing the predeterminded files.
like a armor mod changing your blossom armor into whatever can be a drachen armor changing into whatever the mod will change into, aslong you know the right files.
even male armors on female are possible.

Have you tried reading the instructions?

so if you use a weapon skin on mp , you will look the skin you put on nativepc but other players will see you like the weapon should look like, but that will make you dc more frecuently?

No.
The only way that a transmog can cause dc if you use use the transmod to show no armor at all.
For example: If you use the " MHW Costume Armor" mod and make one of the armor pieces show "No Equipment", that will cause a dc since its sending conflicting information to other players. But that's about it.

There are two kinds of "mods", here.

One is client-side mods, changes to game files, that make certain armor (for everyone) look like something else. Those don't have any effect on multiplayer partners. But if they're wearing the same thing, you'll see them with the new look as well.

The other kind is not really a mod but is "transmog" programs that let you set your layered armor to whatever armor you want that already exists in the game. Other players do see that, but you can only choose existing armor, and no changes are made to the game files, only to the layered armor selection. This can cause you to disconnect from multiplayer sessions if you select a piece of armor that cannot be colored but keep a color applied to it.

Going the route of NOT using transmog, I don't fully understand the renaming process, which is clearly the step I'm missing, since armors don't load in-game.
How many files do I typically want to end up with in the "body\mod" and "body\leg" folders?
What's the point of renaming, and why don't modders finish that step themselves?
