Does combat ever get...fun?
Ok, I'm not trying to start a flame war or troll but does the combat ever get to be tactical or enjoyable? I've played about 3 hours or so and tried the sword and shield, kitana, the Kinsect sword (wrong name) and the double blades and they all feel exactly the same. Run up to monster>hit its tail until it runs away>use my whetstone>run to wherever it ran to>repeat.

I just spent 20 mintues killing the Kula Ya Ku bird to clear my camp and am left wondering does it ever get better?

It's all in finding the right weapon that suits your play style. I tend to jump around from weapon to weapon to keep the game fresh and fun.

it's true combat sucks a bit more early in the game because of sharpness alongside your relative lack of skill. Unlike DS where you die if you suck, monster hunter lets you suck and jsut makes the hunts take longer if you do. Can make it hard to understand how to improve and start feeling good about the combat though, esp when you're using weapons with only a sliver of green sharpness.

A big part of the appeal is learning the intricacies of the weapons and its combos.

Spending 20 minutes on a low rank beginner monster is not good lol, that's a lot of time. Quests, especially solo, take about 10 minutes at most, so there's definitely something worth looking into. I suggest you watch tutorials online to see exactly what each weapon can do since they're all so drastically different.

I honestly don't think that 3 hours is enough to actually learn a weapon.

Dark Souls:

Run up to monster > hit it > fail to dodge > roll away > estus > repeat

See? You can make any game look boring with that tactic.

If you think the Insect Glaive feels exactly the same as any other weapon, you clearly are not very educated.

If you are using all those weapons the same way that's on you. Every single weapon has one or more fighting styles and they are all different from one another. Take some time to learn what a weapon can do. 3 hours isn't even enough time to learn a single weapon. You need to learn combos, play style, how to tackle different sized monsters, how to use them in different terrain etc.
If you're expecting that at some point you won't be hunting monsters, yeah, you will be disappointed. Refund if you can.

yea. the game becomes more tactical as you progress. monsters hit harder so you have to dodge or positon your self better. you have better weapons with better sharpness.

you are fighting X mob and you need to break its horns for the drop you need to upgrade your gear .

you might not notice a huge diffrence in the weapons in the start, but all of them play diversly.

take Insect glaive for example. you goal is to grab buffs with the bug, by getting the bug to hit diffrent zones on the monster. once you have certan buffs then your combos or speed get better and you do much more dps. you have moves that pretty much keep you airborne as long as you keep hitting the monster.

longsword has a charge bar and can do counters

Sword and sheild is able to use item whithout putting the weapon away.

honestly theres lots of difrences between each of the weapons. check out some of the weapon tutorials on youtube.

I have a feeling this guy is not mechanically knowledgeable and is just using light/heavy attacks or something. I recommend looking into your weapons abilities on youtube or something to give you some better insight as to how the weapons should play. Insect Glaive and Longsword are two very different feeling weapons, with two completely different playstyles.

The game gets fun when you:

1) are not being dragged along by the story
2) can play the weapon you want
3) have all the gems/armor you want to make strong builds

Want more tactical play? Use lance. Monster attacks and you counter attack to deal big damage - you basically attack through his attacks and then rapidly strike after.

You will not lance if you try it so you need to watch a video about how lance works. Let me rephrase that in that you should watch a good tutorial vidoe on any weapon you want to play as you are most likely not doing things right/optimal.

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=arrekz+lance+tutorial&view=detail&mid=374460F18C28A5F19602374460F18C28A5F19602&FORM=VIRE

Yes the video is 21 minutes but it is the only lance video you ever need watch (except unless you want to steal people's gem/armor setups because you cant think up your own).

The short version of the lance is that you can't roll but you can block pretty much anything (some things require a guard up gem and about 3 attacks in the entire game cannot be blocked).

Lance is usually about the 14th least popular weapon in the game - but it is very good at fighting almost every monster in the game (which is not something you can say with most weapons)

In addition to what other people are saying, the game is a lot more fun playing in a group. Coop is for fun, and it is really enjoyable.

That being said, 20 mins on kulu ya Ku is a long time. I would recommend switching weapon, or try playing more aggressively. Practice some combos in the training hard and get a really good understanding of some of the weapons.

However, if you are really not enjoying it, refund. You have all your combat abilities from the very beginning. It is difficulties, gear, how you must use those abilities and special passive skills that change.
So yes, there will be more strategy needed in certain ways. Particularly preperation for battles but...
The core combat remains the same throughout and you must improve. So keep that in mind.

This guide video helped me out in picking a weapon. Give it a watch.

once you learn what the weapon you're using is all about and how to REALLY use it besides mindlessly whacking it at monsters the combat gets a lot better...

you're also still in low rank wich is basically the game's easy tutorial mode.

If the long sworrd feels the same to you as a sword and shield, you are playing at least one of them incorrectly.

Eventually you have to learn how to avoid damage or you die. That's really the only difference. It's still whack a monster>chase a monster>repeat until dead.

In-game, open up the menu>info>hunter's notes>weapon controls, to see what your weapon does. Or watch it on youtube.

All of the weapons you tried are light weapons. Try something heavier. Maybe even a ranged weapon.
