Is longsword viable late game
I've finished the main storyline and only ever used longsword.

I got the quest to hunt two tempered bazelgeus and solo'd that. I'm fairly certain they killed eachother a lot more than i killed them.

Then i got an investigation to capture a tempered bazelgeus, in <15mins. I thought "what the heck, can give it a try, i'll use SoS flare and see what happens".

And i think that was the first time i saw late game players. There i was, barely doing any dmg because it's a horrible melee fight (or because i'm bad?), and three other players join, each with this bigass cannon gun, they start going "RARARARA BOOM BOOM BOOM", there were explosions and loud noises everywhere, and they capture it in under five minutes.

So... If i want to get into lategame, do i need to start looking at other weapons? Or is longsword ok vs more melee friendly monsters? Or am i just bad because i spend most of the time fighting bazelgeus running for my life?

Super viable. You probably just have a garbage build.
And Bazel is a bad example for melee in general.

YES it is viable. Be sure to use a Flinch Free jewel because it stops you from flinching from normal people.

For instance my build isn't perfect but against Kulve Taroth I did anywhere from 60 to 100 damage per swing against the horns. Which is good damage imo.

Personally I'd say nothing in this game is so difficult that you couldn't beat it with any weapon type. Of course some weapons kill bosses a bit faster, depending on the monster, but longsword at least shouldn't have any issue holding up dps-wise late game.

Every weapon is viable and longsword is one of the higher tier weapons. However Bazelguese by its very nature is extremely anti-melee and extremely vulnerable to range. It's not as if you can't do well against them with melee but his entire moveset is catered to countering it, so without a lot of experience he is going to be one of your worst matchups.

It's more his teammates that should use Flinch Free.

Longsword is a mid range weapon to use. One of the things I hate about it is that the users of said weapon are notoriously bad at hitting allies!

No... sorry. Some weapons are much more viable than others.

Unless you want to go the route of is it possible to kill a nest of bees with a flyswatter? In theory you could do that but why would you when you have a flamethrower in the closet?

All weapons can kill the monsters under 10 min. Under 5 min if you are good enough. There is no exception.

Even the normal Lance?

A good lance user can easily reach those times.

Lance isn't a trash weapon. It may not have the flashiest kill times but it is a very easy weapon to use when killing difficult content alone. Lands ends up looking bad quite often because people who dont know how that weapon works just spam attacks and ruin the lancer's damage (or worse make you flinch and make you get hit by the boss when you should have taken 1% chip damage from blocking).

Edit: Lance also is one of the best weapons in the game for mounting monsters so that everyone can beat the crap out of it.

That being said the lance does have some very quick kill times on certain bosses. Thats how this game works in that every weapon does not work well vs every boss. You most likely end up playing at least two weapons so you have something to play when your main weapon sucks on a boss.

Go play the arena mission vs the pair of Diablos and tell me how you solo'd that mission with anything besides lance.

Bazel is harder with many melee weapons due to the fact that it flies/moves a lot, stays down less, and makes things explode everywhere. It is however weak to ranged weapons and piercing ammo, so many who join investigations concerning it bring a ranged weapon. This is what those who joined likely did.

Otherwise, this is a good video guide for the longsword. There are a few moves to master and techniques to learn that make a huge difference. The longsword is amongst the most flexible and popular weapon in the game and has great reach for hitting taller monsters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e86lHq-03H4

A generic and easy to make but good for almost everything build can be found here: https://i.imgur.com/RZFb1i7.png

This build isn't the best for any weapon, but very good for most and allows you freedom to switch weapons as needed. You can also freely swap the charm without losing the +5 affinity from attack boost to complement your weapon or playstyle. As a bonus, you will passively heal a small amount of health as you attack.
