I wouldn't hit the chest of any monster with big bang.
if you're not confident in hitting the full big bang combo, the full charge spin attack is probably better to use, or if you wanted to, use the full charge slam and clutch the head (iceborne)
do note that each hit of the big bang send you backwards a miniscule amount.
you can also change the direction of it very very slightly- try aiming the last hit more towards where the monster will be when it stands back up (i assume you're using the combo while it's downed or trapped still, otherwise Don't)
There are some monsters, such an anjanath, where you will find it literally impossible to pull off the big bang combo unless you have a lot of luck or it's in a literal trap. It just recovers too fast to pull off efficiently, and it flops about more than a damn plesioth
And some monsters, such as nergigante, recover fast enough that its possible to miss the head completely with the final hit (thus, 'aim where it stands up')
I used to use the big bang combo a lot but nowadays I find it much more efficient to just use the full charge spin attack.
So I gave it a try in the training area and it worked fine. But for monsters it still misses... I am making sure I nestle up right near the monster (so that you can't possibly move any closer) and to test further tried out parts that were not moving at all, like back. The thing is that the 4th hit seems to go through their body? When trying it on the back or neck it clips through the body and just hits the floor...
