Master Rank Health Spike?
I just got to Master Rank and encountered something I can only describe as a "Health Spike"
I wouldn't call this a difficulty spike, because none of the monsters are really that much harder, its just fights that I was doing in about 3 minutes solo, are now dragging on 15-20 minutes.

For example: I was fighting a Tobi Kadachi and for a good majority of the fight I was focusing his tail (I was using longsword) trying to cut it off. In High Rank this would have taken 5 minutes tops with me being in the Nergigante armour and longsword, but on Master Rank with the maxed out Defender Longsword (I figured the extra damage, sharpness and blast would solve my issue) I spent 18ish minutes fighting that damned Tobi Kadachi focusing his tail, and the thing died before the tail was even cut.

Is a Health Spike like this typical in the genre? My only other exposure to Monster Hunter like games was Dauntless, and I'm aware its called monster hunter - lite for a reason. am I doing something wrong? am I missing out on some key mechanic I completely missed in LR and HR thats supposed to carry me through MR?
Thank you for any responses

no, hunts take longer in MR, and that's good because hunts in HR were WAY too short and fast to be enjoyable.

Nah, there's a pretty big jump in health as you go up each rank, and master rank is no exception. Early MR monsters have more health than HR elders.

Also, higher defense modifier in MR.

Master rank is like the jump from low rank to high rank. monsters get significantly more hp, attack power and higher defense. once you start building master rank equipment the times will go down significantly. but Using HR gear against MR monsters is going to take a lot of time.

Well, a high rank tobi kadachi had 5,510 health in solo. In master rank it has 16,820 health in solo.

you can't cut tobi's tail. you can only break it.

Yeah there is a jump. Even the devs knew that, considering the lowest investigation time limit was raised from 15 minutes to 20.

I myself averaged 5-10 minutes in base and now it's 15.

I only really used Defender in LR, in HR I was making my own armour because I felt like I was missing out on the game and was just cheesing ♥♥♥♥, I kept the weapon around though for some of the harder fights

i don't know why, but there are many tails I feel like we should be able to cut off that we can't. a minor issue with this game lol

Nah. Normal Tobi's tail is a good hitzone, even if you can't cut it off.

Defender weapon is more like you are using a MR weapon in HR.

Try continue the MR games where the proper the hunt begin.

Monster have a lot more health in MR and as a result hunts will take more time. This is also the case when you've completed the Iceborne campaign.
The average hunt in master rank takes at least 10 minutes and anything below 10 minutes is considered a fast time.

You did use a defender weapon though so you might not have had the proper learning curve that regular players have. Those weapons are very overpowered and shouldn't be used unless you are a returning player and wish to rush to the DLC content. This also applies to the armor, but you didn't use that at least.

Make sure that the weapon you are using is effective against that particular monster in terms of element. Also make sure that your gear and armor is up to date.
Try to find skills that complement your weapon and be sure to use health boost 3 as that is definetly a mandatory skill in my opinion.

All things considered, most hunts shouldn't take more then 20 minutes even in the early stages of MR.

Just for you know MR great jagras have the same amount of health like arch tempered kirin in HR which is around 12k, so yeah that could tell you the answer..

The MR quest do take quite a long time when you are just starting off and to be honest i didn't enjoy it at all. It's worth crafting the acidic glavenus weapons before finishing the story so that the quests that follow aren't as tedious.
