Cutting Tails
as a hammer player. How does it work and could I cut a tail going solo hammer?

Another topic tbh where we got conflicting reports. Welcome to MHW.

Half of the population says you gotta do 99.9% damage, then one hit with sever-type and it cuts. This is apparently how it's worked in previous Monster Hunter games.

Other reports I see are that there's a specific damage value with sever that counts as it's own health pool, ergo you gotta use a sever-type weapon/attack all the way to pull it off.

Can't find a video or anything to prove one or the other as usual, and every random reddit thread has people claiming both sides.
The latter is the correct one. Tails have two part health bars. The one that causes staggers and the one that causes severs. And the sever one is ONLY affected by cut weapons.

I was Hammer user in base game. Never cut tail when solo.
You are aware you can just switch your weapon at ANY tent, right? Switch to a GS, chop a tail, go back to camp, get your tool and smash some brains.
I've never seen any hammer or hunting horn cut the tail, it may be technically impossible.
The best weapon to cut tails is GS. Switch axe with zsd spam can do well too, but needs to tenderize. All weapons with slash damages can technically cut the tail. Hammer and HH are better for breaking other limbs or head. I don't know about wings concerning Hammer and HH.

Gotta do sever type damage, and blunt weapons ain't do that. You can bonk the tail worth the entire health bar and it won't come off.

HH hilt stab is sever dmg. So HH can do it.. but... it would take like.. 800 hits..

ZSD doesnt need tenderizer to cut tail. Youre better off using Power Axe to cut the tail any way.
If your needing tails you could do an investigation for that monster and have it as a possible reward. Hunting horn in the past was capable of cutting tails and as puzzlefox said it could work here. Just take really long.

if i am not mistaken, only last hit is need to be sever. thats why there is theory bout that boomerang, try put sever on palico maybe? plunder blade tool maybe work? dunno just guessing

Yea it doesn't need, but just not optimal on non-tenderized tail, especially with elders.
Hammer? Definitelly not. There are no moves that deal sever damage from hammer. On the good side, even your basic combo deals stun damage. That is the point of blunt weapons.
Any damage to a tail lowers its HP threshold, however you cannot go below 1 point of HP unless that last point is Sever damage. Pretty sure you can figure out what sever damage is.

So yes, it is possible for Hammer to "cut" a tail so long as their Palico has a sever weapon (or as some said you can use a boomerang, but it isn't recommended because that's just a hassle and a waste of inventory space)

Similarly, Teostra and Lunastra's horns can only be broken if at least 1 point of Dragon damage has been dealt to them, although I believe this can be at any time during the fight, not a last hit like tail. Not that breaking their horns is easy or worth worrying about, but thought I'd put it out there.

As far as I know, these are the only specific rules to part breaking, although maybe Barroth's head can only be broken if at least 1 point of water damage is dealt to it (just use a single watermoss), but who needs Barroth parts in the first place?

You can't cut a tail with a hammer, try as you might. haha.

breaking the tail gives a chance to pull a tail from the reward pool, and running investigations will see tails show up in the silver/gold reward slots from time to time. equip the plunderblade on your cat, and he'll grab you a few extra chances at tails as well.

you do end up getting 'less' tails than people with sharp weapons who can cut it off, but it just means you'll need a couple more investigations than the average joe longsword.

Every part has its own value. The glavenus can't have its tail severed unless its glowing, so attacks against it do overall damage to the monster, but none to the tail itself... unless its glowing.
