He's useful most of the time, and when he isn't it's very amusing watching him get blown up and smacked around XD
Your cat doesn't help you while you're stunned because they're programmed to only do that stuff ~50% of the time. I thought that was a frustrating design decision, so I installed a "better palico AI" mod that makes it 100%. Using signal also makes it stop what it's doing and come to you, which almost always results in hitting you out of sleep or stun.
I've found the shield trinket is underrated and takes a lot of pressure off you as well, leading to smoother hunts. I finished the entire game without it, mostly using plunder-blade, but now it's welcome. If that's not for you, just use plunderblade, it just seems to stack a lot of flinch which is helpful. In general every sleep or paralyze I'm happily reminded my cat has got my back.
So in summary nah, I love my cat.
