Do you need empty phials to use the charge blade?

Question's in the title. The tutorials say that the charge blade stores energy in phials, but do you actually need empty ones in your inventory? They don't seem to deplete when I use the weapon.

No, the phials are already within the weapon.
They are the little bottle icons under your stamina bar.
