You hit monster with weapon until monster dies, yes, then get monster part to make big weapon to hit bigger monster.
Uga buga very good!!!

I mean thats basically it. You fight monsters, make armor from them to fight the next monster. Your goal is to progressively get stronger and stronger gear. Granted, theres 14 different weapon types, each with different stats and playstyles, and a large variety of monsters.

it's repetitive, but it's fun. You're not just spamming the same button and you actually have to aim.. not like some mmo's with targeting systems and spamming 1234.. try it, if you dont like it, refund it?

He or she doesn’t have the game.

What kinds of "grindy" games have you played in the past? What did you like/hate about them? MH is a grindy game, but it's formula has proven beyond addictive throughout the years. Knowing what we can compare it with will help you decide if you want to try it with some pros/cons.

In terms of things to do it's the same as lot of mmorpg. PvE, you hunt for items (with rng) and get better equipments. But instead of exp giving your character extra stats you need to improve mechanically as a hunter so you can fight efficiently.
The battles are quest based mostly. You accept a quest and you go on it and complete the quest

Unlike most games that involve grinding, monster hunter isn't a mindless slog. The grind isn't bad unless you are trying to get something really specific. There's a strong feeling of progression rather than just grinding to slightly increase numbers.

Thats pretty much it but it gets ALOT more in-depth once you start playing, give it a shot the base game should be much cheaper now that iceborne is out.

Yeah. You’re kinda expected to sink into the loop of hunt upgrade hunt upgrade hunt upgrade. It’s got variation across the board and progression but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t repeatitive.

That’s kinda the appeal I guess.

It's not just spam attack. It's work when early game, but not for end game. Yes, it's pretty repetitive, but it will give you more and more when you goes deeper to understand the game. There is no enough hours to learn all the monster, weapon, skills, and all game mechanics.

Exactly this. Compared to another "grindy" games like Dynasty Warriors, you are always actively involved in a fight. You cannot turn your brain off and make any progress.

If you go in just spamming attacks even the first monster, the Great Jagras, will give you trouble.

Luckily the gameplay is a lot of fun and the game loop of hunt monster and make gear is supplemented by a deep meta game of skill management to get the most out of your build. The story missions also introduce new monsters and areas at a decent pace just to mix up the grind and keep players from being bored.

That said the learning curve is very high. Not only is learning the patterns of each monster daunting, but there are a lot of systems in place that you need to learn in order to have any meaningful progress. Also, the player base is not kidding when they say that the weapons play so differently that it may feel like a completely different gaming experience to switch weapons. Weapons at the extreme ends do feel like you are playing completely different games.

Don't buy the game and just spam attack. Otherwise, you'll be back here angry and asking for a refund.

spamming attacks is fastest way to die. + Each weapon has it's own unique mechanics that you will have to research, since the game won't explain it to you. Think of this game as fighting bosses for 10-15 minutes every match (hunt) and each boss has it's own moveset, skills, weaknesses, etc. However, unlike many games where you are locked in the room with the boss, in MHW you are locked in the map with them.

It's repetitive on the grander scale: hunt monster => build stronger gear => hunt stronger monsters, etc, but the combat itself.. well, I fought each elder for 100+ times, perhaps, with different weapons and I still find myself time to time feeling the urge to get back and do some hunts.

It’s repetitive but it’s not boring. There are a lot of mechanics and things to consider in every fight and while basic rotation is pretty simple - fight monsters to craft better gear to fight stronger monsters - there is a lot of stuff in between.
