Gunlance for Newbies
Don't. Gunlance is not a good weapon to start with.

But, it gets better with skills you can unlock later, and higher "shelling levels." So, this weapon makes a good side weapon to try out mid-game or end-game.
Once you get access to skills like Artillery or Evade Extender, by all means! Try this weapon out.

I think gunlance is perfectly fine for newbies. When I first played Monster Hunter on 3 Ultimate I got hit hard with the Diablos wall. Being a hammer starter then was pretty daunting with the head being so dangerous on Diablos, so I went more defensive and chose a shield weapon that wasn’t “boring” because it was also a gun. The weapon itself still has nice quick attacks like the up pokes, whilst also having massive heavy hitters like the slam and wide swing making it a great weapon to use. I ended up beating the game whilst occasionally using the gunlance for the more aggressive or scary monsters.

Do. Play any weapon you find interesting, even if you can't play at the highest potential.

It's all about having fun and if gunlance sounds awesome to you, you should definitely try and master its playstyle.

Gunlance is very fun but you have to have patience to play it. Unlike lance, the Gunlance has long animations so timing is critical.

I'll post my build later incase someone wants to try it out.

I actually started with Gunlance (both this game and, by extension Monster Hunter) and used it all throughout my base game story progression.

I was drawn to it primarily by the novelty, found I liked it, and so stuck with it, using the Barroth line as I progressed.

That said, you do wind up building quite the clownsuit to get Artillery and Capacity Boost in there, then maybe some Guard. I haven't kept the set but I wonder if I can figure out which low rank gear I used...

The clownsuit is fine since you don't need other decos that other weapons absolutely require to do any damage.

The reason I post this is because I tried it out at the start too, and this was my first Monster Hunter title.
I ended up gravitating to Greatsword and Hunting Horn instead because when playing it, I sucked (I couldn't hit ♥♥♥♥). But later, I found certain skills made it a lot easily, and I was able to play it how I wanted: big gun, big boom.

This is pre-deco stuff, like Low Rank and Early High Rank.

Here is my build - I have alternates for miasma - antiblast - pep - and Guard 5 for AT Nami.

Not shown (on the 2nd page) is Guard Up, Flinch Free, and Protective Polish.

My playstyle is shelling/poking until I can land a Wyvernstake, that is 80% of my damage.

gunlance is fine for newbies unless if you’re playing normal shelling. Normal shelling is tough and requires a lot of commitment. Wide and especially long playstyles are easy as hell though.

Aha! turns out I did still have my old gear (had to make a new Carapace Cannon):

Wide still requires shell-shell-stake for damage. Yes its not as committed as fullburst tho.

Just used my Guard 5 build and still smoked the other three on AT Nami. Never carted, and no healing items used period except for my thunder and water mantles.

Edit - This weapon is vastly underrated, I think only 3% of hunters use it?

no 3 times is fine, go fail the quest, as long as you come along. its just mean our survivability is not enough. they will learn with time.
