Was story co-op with friends ever improved?
I haven't played since 1-2 months after the game was originally released on PC. I have a friend who might be interested in picking up the game for some co-op play. However, in the past you could not join a friend's game during certain story missions (which was a big pain point for fresh characters). Even when you could group up, they system for doing so was a bit awkward where 1 player had to start a story mission and then others could join once the game started.

Things were much easier for non-story missions if I remember correctly, you could actually join another person's hub then start the mission together.

I don't know that I want to recommend the game to my friend for co-op if we both have to play hours of single player content just to finally hook up later.

System hasn't changed

You just needed and still only need to watch the cutscene in order to join or get help by others. This only applies to story missions

Ah, the cutscenes. That's what it was that prevent other players from joining. You've jogged my memory.

Do you know if both players get progression/credit if only one of them is formally starting a story mission and watching the cutscenes? Since I've already played through the game once. I'm thinking it might just be easiest to have my friend play through the story while my character tags along wherever possible between cutscenes. Do you know if that would work with two fresh characters?

hmm....yeah. I'm pretty sure that if both/either of you back out of the mission after the cutscenes are clear and start together/one joins the other you both get credit.

if you are making a new character, you would still both have to watch the cutscene. You just start up, watch the cutscene and then "return from quest" then start up again and both join. Alternatively one of you returns and just joins on the other. Its a dumb system but what can you do.

Edit: You will not be able to join their quest unless you have also watched the cutscene.

Appreciate the responses everyone. I have a clear picture of how it works at this point.

Just a little more info on the topic, when the objective of your story changes to "slay x" or "hunt x", you can return and repost as an assigned quest where people can join from the session lobby. I bring this up cause sometimes an expedition assignment turns into a hunt objective, at which point can be posted as an assigned quest.

I'll just underline, that you have to use the "Return from Quest" option after seeing the cutscene, NOT "Abandon Quest". The second one rolls back your game as if you never started the quest at all.

It's really not complicated both characters need to see the cutscene to coop if you wait till your friend sees it the quest will open up on the other hand if you both need to watch it one just hits return from quest after watching it and joins the other player

Edit: most expedition hunts will also give you an assigned quest if you return to town after the cutscene

Just because it's not complicated doesn't discount how inane it makes to progress with friends.

I did it in base game and Iceborne. Another thing that just plain didn't bother me.

its not its really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ simple Generations was worse with its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ everyone needs to beat it as host key quests this is nothing hell I even agree that cutscenes shouldn't be single player locked but its really not as troublesome as people make it out to be i played base word with a friend where it was at its worst and even then i barely considered it

My friend had barely played monster hunter he tried generations but didnt like the controls and i am calm im just completely baffled in how much of an issue people treat this theres a simple solution to single player cutscenes and iceborne has practically no forced expedition content infact i cant even remember any

Great, you have good coordination with your friend. It just means you had a relatively painless experience. Now replace your friend with multiple cats. You don't know how far into the quest they are, you don't even know if they started the quest, and sometimes they just don't want to back out of their quest to join another or start as one.

Your point my friends not stupid sure but i'd hope most people are smart enough to make coop fairly simple even considering the fact they force single player cutscenes especially when theres people that can just explain how to get around it
