Newbie here, are all weapons viable?
I typically end up "maining" weapons in games like this, and the last thing I want is to figure out my choice of weapon type can't keep up with the others.

Yes, they're all viable. Certainly, there will be some that are simply better than others in terms of pure dps, but in the hands of a skilled hunter, this typically results in hunt times with mere minutes of difference between the fastest and slowest kills.

Just gonna join the train of people dunking on this post. This guy has 44 hours in the game and has no idea what he's talking about.

Ok ok, it’s time to fess up.

You all got jebaited. I am perfectly aware all weapons are viable. And that hammer and GS, and switchblade are OP.

I did that to see, how quickly this will become a toxic sesepull. You will be happy to know you passed my meme test.

You all were knowledgeable. 👍

Thanks for the quick replies y'all, good to know the general consensus is that all weapons are viable.

Since I came from Dark Souls 3, the game where a single weapon type dominated the rest, I was pretty nervous about weapon balance.

First of all, choose the weapon that suits you and train your skills.
all weapons are very useful and talent owned.
try to test all weapons on training area :D
a good hunter will be able to use all the weapons.

the best answer to your weapon viability question is:

yes.

S+ : Sword and Shield, Lance, Heavy bowgun

I'm a lance main through and through, I have 5000 quests completed with the weapon . But the lance is no where near S tier. It has some of the worst damage output in the game, and with chip damage and the counter claw mechanic, its not even a very safe weapon. Its still viable, but it is absolutely worse in every way when compared to the HBG and is a contender for the worst weapon in the game right now.

I like evasion lance more than blocking myself. Fun stuff!

Since your question and the point of your thread is literally answered.

What? Which weapon type? I'm not the meta youtube watcher. I only have my own experience coupled with some fighterPL videos (they are so fun).

Which weapon type do you mean (for pve)? I dont recall one dominating.. except the usual wizard stuff.

At least that was how lance USED to be played in the previous series.

Capcom actually made monsters with triple attack (Berukyurosu) where Lance used to be able to triple jump.

Then, there was this:

My answer would be that unless you practice with the weapon you might find some situations that become very difficult with the weapon. Roughly every weapon can go anywhere, but there are some monsters that make some weapons less appealing during those fights.

The relevance of any weapon to any fight depends more on the player than on the weapons and monsters.

Do not ever try to solo Rajang with HH. By the time you finish one swing Rajang's gonna punch you, fart on you and bodyslam you to death.

I was referring to straight swords. And I don't mean just mindless R1 spam; if you're a good player and you can use a straight sword correctly on your build, your combos can come very close to putting out ultra weapon damage without the weaknesses ultras come with. As a person who mained the ultra category I was frustrated when I finally switched over to a straight sword and the easy wins came rushing in.

Longsword/Lothric Knight Sword paired with the Iron Round Shield is a killer combo whether it's pvp or pve, and you can get these weapons at the beginning of the base game.
