blocking roars
Tried blocking a roar with an HBG today and I got staggered forever into a great chungus belly flop and died. Do I need 3 shields to block roars or some level of guard? How about other weapons like GS or lance?

You can block with any level of guard but more shield mods and higher level guard skill reduces stamina consumption and knockback as well as recoil when blocking

I think you need Guard Up? Or a flat amount of decent def to begin with, along with Guard 5.

You only need 1 shield, but additional shields and levels in guard can help further improve your blocking capabilities. Also, make sure you're not too close, as some monsters end up sticking their necks out when they roar and roar behind your shield. You have to block where the roar comes from, so aim your shield right at their face.

You don’t need guard up to block roars, but like Suzaku said you need to be facing the monster to block the roar. You can also “block” tremor inducing attacks as well.

I was looking directly at him in the aim stance, just like when I block other attacks. I was not in block stun, at least it didn't look like block stun, and there was no block sound on the followup attack.

The roar source will always be the head. So if you're say... below the neck, near the belly, you'll have to turn around and face the head before you block.

I’d almost like to say you probably didn’t have enough stamina to black the roar so it treated it as a knock-back instead. Also what monster was this against?

I have discovered that the recovery after shooting is way longer than what it appears. Blocks will not proc for like 0.5-1 second after returning to what appears to be a neutral stance. Even a blocked strong roar has a pretty sever stagger, though it looks like I can still block normal attacks during this time. I take it higher levels of guard would reduce this?

Higher levels of guard and/or more shield mods.

you can block it by facing where the roar comes,as long as you have your shield up you can block almost all roars, even without guard up
