do whatever you want
Play any weapon the way you want. You can even play tank longsword
........
SnS is balanced between defense and offense
It's basically the most versatile weapon in the game, which makes it arguably the easiest weapon to use, which puts of a lot of players who don't want to bother with the "beginners" weapon.
Much like the lance it's solidly utilitarian and not flashy at all, the only real stand out feature is the item use, but you can just ignore that; monster hunter isn't the kind of game that expects players to fill specialised roles.
I consider my Free Meal, Speed Eating, Wide Range builds as fun builds and I definitely can sense the lack of offense when I use them.
Just go offense and bring the dust and powder.
It's not expected, but more anticipated. If I see someone using an SnS I typically lean myself towards the notion that they're probably packing Wide-Range or at least planning to be more helpful than your average random with a Longsword or something.
I don't expect / demand someone to use that skill with any weapon least of all the SnS though, it's just a common stereotype / playstyle associated with that weapon, so your mind naturally drifts in that direction most of the time.
Perfect Rush being buffed has made them a force to be reckoned with at least, so even if they're not packing Wide-Range or other support utilities at least you can know that they're capable and able to contribute to the hunt better than ever before, now.
I spent a lot of sieges getting side-eyed by Safi too.
