Monster Hunter: World
So is it expected of SnS users to act as "supports"?
I mainly just see people talk about how they support mostly. I was thinking of trying it out, but I don't wanna craft healing powder all the time, just because people expect me to support them.

No, they just perform the support role the best compared to the other weapons since they can use items with weapon drawn. With Perfect Rush buffed they definitely can compete in the damage department.
At best you're sort of asked to consider throwing out a dust of life when things look awful if you feel like it :D. Full support players are mostly considered to be a waste of space, like corner dooting hunting horns.

if anyone expects sns players to just be healbots then they're an idiot
do whatever you want
People expect you to kill the monster as efficiently as possible.
It isn't expected per sé, but as said before SnS is the best healer in the game. So people might be disappointed if you're playing SnS but not healing others at all. Still, you can play the weapon however you want. It's not the most flashy weapon but it can dish out damage just fine either way.
Personally i think if you're going full support, might as well play hh for the attack up large.
Play any weapon the way you want. You can even play tank longsword

........

SnS is balanced between defense and offense
SnS is really good at support, but it does have respectable damage, stun capabilities and some top tier mounting ability, as well as high mobility and blocking.
It's basically the most versatile weapon in the game, which makes it arguably the easiest weapon to use, which puts of a lot of players who don't want to bother with the "beginners" weapon.
Much like the lance it's solidly utilitarian and not flashy at all, the only real stand out feature is the item use, but you can just ignore that; monster hunter isn't the kind of game that expects players to fill specialised roles.
i made a full dmg build then put a friendship charm lvl5 + gobbler, very awesome

Ive had the enmity of safi using blast sns....
I find that bringing Dust of Life and Lifepowder is enough for support no matter what weapon I use. I never seem to run out of them and I barely craft them at all.

I consider my Free Meal, Speed Eating, Wide Range builds as fun builds and I definitely can sense the lack of offense when I use them.

Just go offense and bring the dust and powder.

I heard since they added perfect rush it can have some the best damage in the game. So no you don't have to be support. It's just it can be good at it since you can heal with the weapon drawn so it's good with wide range. And like all fast attacking weapons it can be good to apply status effects.

800 b4 buff, 1500 now with the PERFECT perfect rush
I think people mostly talk about support SnS because there isn't much else to talk about with it. It's not super popular, it's not super unpopular. It's just kind of the standard outside niche support builds.
Sword and Shield goes hand in hand with easier item usage, which in turn goes hand in hand with being well paired up with Wide-Range.

It's not expected, but more anticipated. If I see someone using an SnS I typically lean myself towards the notion that they're probably packing Wide-Range or at least planning to be more helpful than your average random with a Longsword or something.

I don't expect / demand someone to use that skill with any weapon least of all the SnS though, it's just a common stereotype / playstyle associated with that weapon, so your mind naturally drifts in that direction most of the time.

Perfect Rush being buffed has made them a force to be reckoned with at least, so even if they're not packing Wide-Range or other support utilities at least you can know that they're capable and able to contribute to the hunt better than ever before, now.

If you use it right, the SnS now has about the same DPS potential as the Great Sword.

I spent a lot of sieges getting side-eyed by Safi too.
