Is elemental resistance useless?
Wearing full zorah armor lvl 4 with a bow and still getting one shot by azure rath fireballs from full health unless I wear the vitality mantle. Am I missing something or is the 20 fire resistance worthless?

Health boost > ressistance

Augmenting armor also helps to survive.

All attacks, including big balls of fire, are somewhat physical and are therefore affected by defense values. Upgrade your armor.

Increase your health with a meal, max potion, and the Health Boost skill. Also consider Divine Protection to further boost your survivability.

Ranged weapons take increased damage from all sources.

Elemental resistance is a 1% damage reduction per point. You'll likely need a lot of it to really notice a difference. The most important thing is that having 20 or more resistance makes you immune to the associated elemental blight, like additional burn damage, ice blight, thunder blight, etc.

You'll notice elemental resistance when you fight against Teostra and especially Kirin and Lunastra.

so resistance is only useful for blights, got it

Mostly, yeah. It matters a bit more for monsters where the majority of damage you're likely to receive is from that element rather than physical attacks, like thunder from Kirin, or fire from Teostra.

Regardless, don't load up on resistances hoping to face-tank attacks. Resistances and defense are there to help you survive your mistakes, not to encourage them.

bow user, not expecting to tank anything but I would like to survive one fireball attack at least. so I don't get screwed over when I dodge seven homing slashes and then it instant shoots a fireball while I'm stuck in the dodge animation

When I first started out, it was easier for me to go with armor / resistance. Taking less damage meant the consumables I could afford was enough.

Now that crafting Max Potions, getting L elemental resistance from food and using gear giving +50 Health / Stamina is almost trivial PLUS having Health Regen augment and being able to dodge attacks... max Armor, +50 HP, +20 elemental in that order? I pretty much ignore elemental unless it's Behemoth or AT something, enough to ignore blights is enough.

thats what sheathing and flash pods are for.

Teo/Luna and Kirin are much easier with 20-40 resist. Vaals is almost mandatory to have at lease two effluvia resist.

AT versions of these guys: forget non-defensive builds.

But to confirm what was said before: defense capped > health boost > elemental resist

Tell us your armor stats, Elemental res and overall def value. Did u upgrade, augment the armor already?

If your defense is low, you're still gonna get one shot unless you have something like 100 elemental resistance although I forgot if there were diminishing returns on that.

as far as i know is physical defence that goes in diminishing return

as for elemental resistance it equal to the number you see

if you have 40 fire res you are taking 40% less fire damage

Defense physical resistance is (80/(80+DEF))= incoming damage percentage

Try 40 resistance. You'll see the difference.

Also, all elemental attacks while monster is enraged will spell doom for you at tempered level and above.

Also, vitality mantle is so horribly bad its not even funny, use rocksteady or specific resistance one.

Contrary to what the tool tab says about ranged characters getting "Increased elemental resist", they still take more damage from all attacks than melee does.
Ranged weapons gain a hidden +5 to all element resistances. The increase is incredibly arbitrary. The trade-off for that is only having 70% of their effective armor rating.
