gl = big iron
Lance on the other hand has two options - guard lancing and evade lancing. You either poke the hell out of every monster and counter every attack or you hop around it all the time. You have the best shield possible but you can be extremely mobile if you wish so.

GL shelling does flat damage that can be boosted by just using artillery skill. But using shelling eats sharpness like nothing else.
GL has more playstyle variety due to different shelling types.
+ Has the best guard in the game in power guard
+ Is surprisingly mobile with guard dashes and lance charge
+ Can stick to the monster like glue by shrugging off attacks
+ Great reach
+ Can cancel out of pokes with counterguard and guard dashes
+ Can mount without a ledge
- Not a very exciting weapon to play; your attacks are mainly going to be "three pokes, reset, three pokes, reset, etc."
- Chews through sharpness pretty quickly
Gunlance:
+ While not as good as the lance's, the gunlance's guard is still very potent
+ Shelling will always do a fixed amount of damage, no matter which part of the monster it hits
+ Shelling will never bounce off a part -- good for breaking parts that other weapons would bounce off of
+ Wyvern's Fire deals three big ticks of damage -- great for waking up monsters
+ Has three different shelling types to choose from, which could change your style of play depending on choice
- Shelling rips through sharpness, normal-type gunlances especially
- Once your sharpness dips below green, shelling damage drops
- Shelling is disabled once sharpness reaches red
- Not as mobile as the lance, unless you've got Evade Extender equipped
- Cannot cancel an attack with a guard
your build is wrong if u lose sharpness as lance i fight 3 monsters and still have white get 3 AT teo set gg
1k+ hours and i played both
Lance is more fun to me as it counter attacks and u can jump with charge easy to mount its not only poking there i couple of moves u can do.
Gun lance there is 3 types
Wide=Poke and shell ammo finished reload repeat wyverblast.
Long= wyrmstake and wyvernblast thats it
Normal=its mele i wont even recommend to try that only if your pro and know when to attack cause its all chain combo useless to slow.
If you need any help with builds for gun lance or lance add me i can show u what we run me and my friends for all At and tempered bahemoth etc.
Lance feels a lot more fluid to me, just in general. There’s no surprises with lance. You know exactly what works in any scenario, and you generally have a window to do that thing because of the quick poke nature of the lance. A monster is only dangerous to a lance user if you don’t know the move tells, as you’ll have time to get behind your shield for pretty much any move if you’re paying attention. It does solid damage, more than people tend to expect, and you’re oddly mobile for the biggest tank weapon in the game. I picked lance up pretty grudgingly originally, thinking I’d find it dull as hell, but now it’s one of my favorites to use.
Gunlance...the few times I tried it it just didn’t feel nearly as fluid to me. Animations are slower, you leave yourself open to being hit a lot easier, and despite being about as long as the lance it feels a lot shorter ranged. The gun portion of the weapon doesn’t have much range at all, and the reload mechanic on it leaves you pretty wide open. I’m sure it’s a good weapon in the right hands, and I guarantee you you could find people who would sing its praises while criticizing the lance, but for me personally, it’s just nowhere near as satisfying to play.
I love reactive moves in this game, such as LS Foresight sligh and CB Guard Points, it seems lance has that - whereas Gunlance does not.
I'll take both for a spin tonight and see where we end up.
The thought behind this post was to create this 2man team just stacking on the monsters face holding ground.
=I suggest both you and your mate master both weapon. Explanation had been done by some folks here.
>Regarding reply #7 - #11
=Generally off topic. Explanation is also lacking. I suggest if op is interest, op should google or youtube for further info.
GL is more of a sheath and combo game like GS, but if you go heavy shelling build, you don't have to worry about weakpoints.
Lance armor builds are a little tighter, since you're getting all your damage from attack raw. GL is freer because half your damage is from shelling so artillery and capacity is all you can do on that side, and building for handicraft is pointless.
If I wanted to hit weakspots I'd pick a faster weapon than a Lance that makes me feel like an old man trying to move boxes. With Gunlance I at least don't need to move around.
Yes the Gunlance shelling is wrecking durability but even at nearly red durability the amount of damage you lose is about 5 points or so from the original 64 or 63. It's not much that you lose. Then you also have the Wyvern blast move which does 3 hits at like 130 damage each. Lovely to use.
So what do you need? Artillery on level 3 and this can be done with a charm I believe if you don't have the jewels and then find a lance with Wide Level 4 shelling.
Then you can add whatever else you want.
You don't ever need to bother with any of the melee attacks with this lance if you focus on shelling build so any normal damage stat or elemental is of no concern.
