Is switch axe a good weapon?

I looked up speedruns with switch axe and found that while bow and dual blades users can kill an arch tempered teostra in less than 3 minutes, switch axe users take more time than that, like 8 minutes, I was wondering if It was because they aren't good enough with the weapon or because the weapon itself doesn't provide with enough damage to speedrun? If so. . .what is it for? And why don't people use the sword's special attack when it's fully charged? They just completely forget about it :/

What dual blades user is killing arch tempered teostra in less than 3 minutes? Getting less than 6 minutes would be amazing for DB let alone less than 3. Bow is just bow, so no surprise it's above switch axe, especially in a bad matchup like AT teo. Just from a quick youtube search, the very first listing for an AT teo switch axe kill is less than 7 minutes, so I don't really know where you are getting this 8 minute stuff from.

People don't use zero sum discharge because it has low damage and a long recovery. Standard sword combos are much stronger.

If you enjoy playing a weapon, then it's good. Monsterhunter is not about doing the most DPS in the shortest amount of time. It's about playing successful multiplayer hunts imo. No one on your team is going to care what weapon you use if, you hit the monster, don't cart and have cohesive armour skills.

Unless you are trying to set a TA record take the speed runs as a grain of salt.

Turns out that not only is it a diddlydong, it's a transforming diddlydong. Tilting the Circle Pad forward and pressing X in Axe mode makes you do a short forward stab, then hit R and X after then to MANLY SHIFT into Sword mode with a slash. OR, you can do the MANLY CHOPS OF DOOM, then finish it off with a tap of R to do this magnificent Reverse Roundhouse Slash. After the RRS, hit that R one more time to MANLY SHIFT into Sword Mode. In Sword Mode, whenever your sword sweeps horizontally, R+X shifts you back into Axe form to EXPAND DONG. (seriously, the Axe is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long.)

Switch Axe is versatile, too. You want extra MANLINESS? Get a power phial. Want to see that monster pant for breath as you turn it into the next main course? Exhaust Phials. You can even KO the monster if you're manly enough. Want to support your significantly less manly teammates? Para Phial, Poison Phial, blah blah, they're all yours. Or is the monster weak to element? He convinced me, I'm going to give it a try, I was only using the Rarity 8 Taroth Paralysis Switch Axe, but I guess I'll be giving it a try to the other axes :D

Giving a slightly more serious answer than the other guy (though I loved every minute of it)

I’ve done 900 or so quests as a Switch Axe wielder in this game. My next highest is lance at just shy of 100. So that should give perspective on how much I enjoy the weapon. Is it the be all end all most optimized weapon for speed runs? No. But it doesn’t need to be, because it’s so fun to play. The ranged weapons by and large bore me, shooters get dull fast for me and turning MH into a shooter takes away a lot of the fun for me.

Coming off a 6 minute Greatest Jagras hunt where I managed my gauges well and smacked his lunch out of him the moment he escaped my pitfall trap? That is satisfying as hell. Having one of the best wakeup hits after Greatsword is satisfying as hell. Having the absolute best mount finisher is satisfying as hell. Zero sum discharge when used well is satisfying as hell. And the fluidity of the moveset and ease of making sure you’re never not doing damage is satisfying as hell.

It’s one of several weapons in this game that has nothing like it anywhere else, and I absolutely love it. Whether it’s the true fastest weapon or not does not matter to me at all. I love the thing to death and can’t imagine maining anything else

SA is fine for the end game but its around the bottom for match ups.
this makes it a bit rougher for speed runs but for general use its a non issue.

I love the weapon too, but that's just over the top, man!

I just think it's the most fun weapon in the game. You have a very mobile axe form that you can swing around high and wide and slam into a monster's face for high damage. You have a Sword mode that does tons of damage and can inflict Status Effects if like me you love building for it. The Sword can also supercharge and cause you to do bonus hits with each sword swing, which is always lovely. And finally, you can straight up climb onto the monster and inject explosive status/elemental damage right into the monster's veins and finish off with a giant explosion.

If you wanna get right into the monster's face and dish out a storm of punishing blows, but don't want to deal with Bounce or many small hits like dual swords would, the Switch Axe is the best weapon style in the game, hands down..

Also, it's a giant axe that turns into a giant sword. And can paralyze/poison monsters. What more do you want?

No escape, fatrolls in sword mode, very bad move set, utter garbage without evasion extender, and the damage (the only reason to pick this weapon) is not that great.

People constantly talk about what a good weapon it is. BUT NOBODY USES IT. I seen maybe 2-3 SA users for 350 hours of the game! This weapon is even worse than Hunt Horn.

Cuz it has 0 defensive options, the swings lock you into animation for way too long, the side hops are a joke, downward fade slash adds insult to injury as it's way too slow and defeats its own purpose and finally it takes longer to stagger arch tempered monsters with SA, compared to other weapons.

Not only do you have to be an iframe god to compete in a SA speed run with other weapons, you also have to stop dps in order dodge, while some other weapons can dodge and reposition WHILE dpsing, so let that sink in.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of me viscerally screaming a battle cry as I cling onto a Rathalos' face as it takes off into the air, while I inject 100% pure poison into its left eye socket.

Yeah, sure, you want raw damage, the Heavy Bow Gun is better (actually that's my backup weapon), but Switch Axe is just FUN.
