You've been using the Defender gear to carry you through low and High Rank, right? And now you're approaching Master Rank in the Iceborne content and you're wondering if you should upgrade to Master Rank gear, even though you lose your skills? Well let me tell you flat out that the sheer amount of defense you get at the LOWEST END of Master Rank gear is still leagues better than literally the highest possible augmented defense levels of High Rank.
Meaning: you're going to have to get used to leaving certain skills behind and embracing the biggest numbers available to you, at least until you have beaten Iceborne's story and either gotten to the final boss or beaten it and unlocked the Guiding Lands (if you can). THEN you'll have access to a much wider range of gear from various monsters, with tons of skills, and WAY more slots for skill decorations, allowing you much higher degree of freedom in your build customization.
Additionally, by the time you get to that point you can start taking on Event quests that reward you with tons of really strong Lv 4 gems, again letting you make all kinds of builds.
TL;DR screw your defender gear, just make whatever has the most defense until you beat Iceborne.
Masters Touch is too restrictive for me to ever bother using it. It's very good for maintaining solid DPS and using some of the more restrictive weapons with slivers of purple or white sharpness though.
If you mean Guardian Armour vs Master Rank gear, drop any High Rank armour immediately (especially if it's Guardian Armour) and put on a set of Master Rank Great Jagras armour (and upgrade it) unless you've got an incredibly pin-point efficient High Rank set that gives you all the juicy skills - in that case wear it until you reach Tigrex and then seriously consider swapping to something Master Rank tier.
And with Safi coming soon, Roll a Safi weapon to get Teostra Mastery and just slap one armor piece from Teostra with a bunch of Affinity then you never need to sharpen too.
Some good early replacements are, Beo Coil B+ and Beo Greaves B+
You won't encounter Velkhana until you've beaten many of IB's bosses though so until then you should use any Divine Blessing jewels you have.
I used Divine Blessing for a while but as I saw the damage output of slotting in critical enhancements, I had to drop that skill and go with Health Boost instead because I didn't have room for both.
After that, It's just going for whats comfortable. Tigrex is a popular choice for newer players as the Free Meal Secret skill allows for a reduction of item usage by 75% which allows you time to farm up before the guiding lands opens up and items become a worry of the past thanks to steamworks.
Also Defender weapons are viable right to the final boss if you know what you are doing.
Iron weapons will win out in DPS, but if you just want to focus on your armour at first, the blast procs do make up for any damage loss.
How much defense to nullify the use of divine blessing... doesn't matter one bit. You just literally can't afford to skip out on the exponential increase of master rank armor compared to HR. Making a full set of MR gear will crank you all the way up to 600 defense minimum, I'm pretty sure.
As for your weapon, same deal. Unless you want your hunts to take 30-45 minutes every single time, it is more than highly recommended--dang near mandatory-- that you leave ALL of your now-obsolete (read: TRASH) High Rank gear, weapons and armor, behind, and upgrade to Master Rank weapons and armor ASAP. The difference is not miniscule. In fact, I'm pretty sure the difference in the highest possible True Raw attack between High Rank and Master Rank is almost double if not more. It was like around 200 in HR, but it's pretty easy to reach 400 at Master Rank endgame. Fitting for Master Rank monsters that have exponentially more health than the High Rank monsters.
So yeah, do yourself a favor and put all your favorite gear in a box. Almost, if not ALL, of the High Rank armor has already gotten/will be soon getting Layered Armor variants for you to look the part of all you'd like. Also, all? or NEARLY all of the unique Event weapons, such as the Dante CB, will be getting upgraded Master Rank versions pretty soon, too. They have upgrade nodes on the Weapon Tree, so that's not even just a theory. That's just fact.
In other words, your love for the Dante CB only needs to be postponed. You can pull it back out of your stash when the upgrade event rolls around LOL.
TL;DR
upgrade ASAP or literally just die (in-game) and take twice as long to kill anything.
You are dream destroyer... But actually Dante aint so bad atm - I will need to see what are the other options...
Defender gears won't carry you that long in master rank..
