I didn't say the game was easy, I said the concept of it is simple and easily understood.
1. Gear up
2. Gather survival items
3. Hunt monsters
4. Chill out in town and make better armor and equipment
5. Hunt tougher monsters
6. Eventually get to hardest monsters, defeat them, make the decision on continuing or stopping
Story is irrelevant. There aren't any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ microtransactions or some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ "WOAH COOL KID YA LIKE FORTNITE CHECK OUT THIS SKIN ONLY 15 DOLLARS FROM MOMMYS CREDIT CARD" store anywhere. You can hunt with your friends. You can hunt solo. You can fiddle around and just do the side stuff like snapping pictures of cats, catch fish for the fisherman, catch small wildlife for the researcher, trade for little trinkets with the cats and go on a little treasure hunt just for the sake of a little silly treasure hunt.
It's not for everyone, but its popular because at the end of the day, people can just turn the game on, and do stuff without hassle. Usually.
Edit: Oh an it's so popular because Capcom and Sony threw a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of money at the marketing and made the game vastly easier for a more casual friendly game experience with World. They streamlined a lot of it to cast a wider net. That helps keep it popular.
Edit again: And also, it's a monster hunter game on pc that is easily accessible and in a bunch of different languages.
Same reasoning really. You can look at any game and make the same conclusion.
I find it fun, because I don't actually have to build what everyone else builds. I can experiment with different sets and weapons and so on. I have 400 hours in and I still only touched 3 weapons out of the 14.
