What are your thoughts on MH speedrunning and the speedrunning community?
I've been asking this in a few different communities. Just want to get a feel for what people think of speedrunning in the MH series. I'll just copy my reddit post:

Postat inițial de Myself, on Reddit:
Title is honestly self-explanatory. I thought I'd just ask what the general community thinks of this subset of itself.

Do you like speedruns? Dislike them? Like only certain kinds? Like speedrunners? Don't like them? Only like some of them? Want to try speedruns out, but think you can't? Tried them out but didn't like them? Or are you a runner yourself? Or maybe you want to comment on something else entirely?

No right or wrong answers. I just want to get a feeling of what people think on this matter! My own answer will be down as a comment, which hopefully won't steer the thread too much around my own opinion. I want to see your opinions, not mine! :p

And since the board format doesn't lend itself well to me posting a separate comment with my own opinion, I'll copy the comment I made on Reddit below. But don't let it sway your comment too much, please! I really want to hear what you think about speedrunning yourself, not what you thought about my opinion!

Postat inițial de Myself, on Reddit:
As for me, I am a runner myself. Speedrunning for me is a way to greatly extend the games' lifespan. For my first few MH games (Tri, FU, P3rd, 3U and 4U in that order) I didn't run at all, but then I'd eventually just get bored of the games. After I had already cleared all the quests and defeated the hardest monsters, why play anymore? Sure, I could farm for some equipment i didn't have yet, but what was the point? I had already cleared the hardest challenges in the game already, so why bother getting better stuff?

Speedrunning gives me an additional goal after that point, of always trying to get a bit better on hunts. And I seriously really love the series' gameplay, so getting this additional fuel to play even more feels really, really great!

That said, I get it's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people just want to be done with the game. Others will find different ways to continue engaged, such as trying out different weapon types, helping out friends or just collecting all equipment for the hell of it. And all of those are great ways to enjoy the game too! They're just not my own particular cup of tea. :p

Thanks for participating! :D

I like watching speedruns, but only TA runs. I do not feel the appeal of watching non-TA runs.

It's mostly just cheesy tactics abuse when it's without those rules.

When it comes to trying to speedrun, I've tried sometimes, with my main weapon (CB) but despite achieving some good times, it stresses me out too much.
Also, I lack consistency. I suck at predicting monsters, I'm only good at reacting in the moment to whatever the monster does, lack of prediction is certainly bad for speedrunning.

I stopped speed running when they started doing Games Done Quick with bugs/exploits. I used to like watching people play the game legit speedrunning, but this community of glitching ♥♥♥♥ to skip entire levels is sooo damn resident sleeper.

My view on MH speedrunning is the same as my view on speedrunning in general: It's impressive but not something I'm particularly interested in.
Not why I play, not something I'm inclined to watch.

I appreciate that that side of the community exists though, in my experience those kinds of players will really pull a dev's ear to fix stuff, and the really good ones tend to have the influence to have their words looked at, which can make for a more reasonable game.

I don't mind it. Specific to monster hunter, watching speed-runners have allowed me to pick up a few of their tricks and I improved as a result, but I am a far cry from executing hunts with the same finesse and precision as they do. Then again, I don't retry when I know a hunt isn't going optimally, but I appreciate their efforts in any case.

I mostly watch them to pick up a few of their tricks, less concerned with the clear-times. Watching speed-runners is what allowed me to eventually solo behemoth pre-iceborne, BARELY.

My only issue is when people start praising speed-run builds as gospel, and that they are to be adhered to at every expense.

If I'm farming something a long time, I guess I start caring a bit about clear-time since it's the only way to break the monotone of killing Vaal dozens of times.

I don't watch any speedruns through or care that much. Praising weapon viability based on speedrun leaderboards or trying to apply any of that into the average Joe's gameplay is just urggghhh to read.

For MH specifically I enjoy watching TA runs. "Normal" runs usually are just hard CC where they just wail on a downed monster the whole time. That isn't to say that doesn't already happen sometimes with headlocking, but at least it feels earned there.

tbf GDQ probably has to deal with time constraints (I've never cared enough to actually watch it, so maybe not). You can probably find various glitchless runs on most games, this is a pretty common complaint.

Initially, I was interested in speedruns, learned something from them (mainly how to headlock/stunlock certain monsters) and eventually got into it. It was plenty of fun, despite needing to reset often or grind for obnoxious RNG (spareshot). That was in base game, on IB with the introduction of Clutch Claw, it's unnecessarily tedious and I just dropped it and switched to only watching speedruns, not doing them anymore.
I have never, nor will I ever, care about the speed running community for any videogame.
Mave 4 mart. 2020 la 13:46
Do not care in a MH game. For me the most fun comes out of a good teamplay. Building up a good chain, having some nice team moves etc. Adaptation is the keyword here, something speedrunners usually do not have. They have their program that they follow, if something happens that falls out of that, reset and try again. Do not be mistaken, i'm not saying you don't need a lot of practice for speedrunning. However: Ask a speedrunner why they speedrun solo/without cat. The obvious answer will be "because than the fight is more controlled/predictable", and that's exactly what i mean by adaptation. I think a well oiled group is more "skilled" than a "machine" that follows protocoll. Again: No hate for speedrunners and i see how that expands their games lifespan, just my humble opinion

Thats why there is glitchless runs as well.
I have no interest in it in any video game.
Useless and a waste of time imo unless you're getting payed for it or are doing it for a reward or something.
speedrunning? you mean joining SOS only and only if they are at least 5 minutes in?
