Best Way to Progress?
Just discovered the Coral Highlands, and I'm wondering what to do next. So much stuff to farm, but I don't know what I need. Should I just keeping doing Assigned Story Quests as they come ASAP until I hit a wall? And then find the gear to break that "wall"?

just play mate. im taking it slow and doing everything i feel like. im not in a hurry. my first MHW so im enjoying it fully. im at Coral as well and gear wise im using Anja armor wich i havent upgraded. with a Dear Lutimis Chargeblade, so far im not really having any problems.

i suggest take your time doing the optional missions and such. the Research missions i guess are for specific farming from what i can tell.

spent all day today just doing the optional missions and event missions. atm im currently getting the new gadgets for my lill buddy. so he also gets some new usefull toys!

If you haven't yet make sure to track the doodles at least once on each map, worth it

Until you get well into HR, pick one weapon. Your main weapon, what you like best and perform best with etc. Pick one set of armor. Upgrade that and only that, if you get access to a better weapon in your weapon class via another tree, go for it if it's a viable upgrade, if it's for 20 points extra damage or a little doot in sharpness, stay focused on the game.

Pretty much all the low rank gear is piss worthless, that's just how MH is. A lot of it can upgrade to HR tier stuff and be pretty good, but the truly amazing gear isn't unlocked until the ass end of High Rank and that's where many, including me, think MH really 'begins'. When the whole game is open to you, the grinding is real and you start enjoying hunts more. Grinding during Low Rank is a game of diminishing returns, so avoid doing lots of optionals and stuff unless it's for unlocking Canteen stuff and etc. Even then, you're better off rushing through LR just to get it over with.

Basically, just rush low rank. Most of the optional quests and stuff isn't going to net you any amazing gear, it'll just make you have hands in lots of pies so to speak, with a lot of weapons, but all of them are at low upgrade points.

Once you get up into High Rank and beyond, go nuts. You'll have access to way more quests, ♥♥♥♥ gets harder, way more gear to make, etc. Low Rank is just a sliver of the game, I always rush through it, it's the weakest aspect of MH honestly.

I wouldn't stop powering through assignments only and upgrading only one set of gear until you hit your first wall or get to the endgame. If you hit a point where the difficulty spikes to a point where skill doesn't seem to get you much, your gear is probably past the point where you can ignore it too much and needs grinding to upgrade. If you hit the endgame, congratulations, prepare to sink hundreds upon hundreds of hours into the game from here if you're the typical MH player like me, so do whatever the hell you want.

The way I see it, all those optional quests and all that gear is still going to be there when I power through the ranks. I just prefer not to start upgrading stuff heavily and going nuts until I'm at a point where I know I won't hit walls. It's such a bummer to get really into a weapon, only to hit a point in its upgrade tree that you won't have access to for another 10+ hours.

My suggestion is to do the optional quests and buff up your canteen. Also do exploration and harvest everything. Its all useful for something. You'll know you hit a wall when the story quest boss murders you by looking in your direction. Also dont forget you can upgrade armor with the spheres to boost its 'level' up higher than when it was crafted.

Yup. Generally speaking do what you like, but don't ignore the optional quests you see because they help increase your overall power and options. Some optional quests will give you more food options, some give you different tools and there are palico quests to get more palico gadgets for your buddy. (technically these are more like side quests but you get my point)

Take your time, do what you want in whatever order you feel like at the time. You can't miss anything. So even if you end up going back to it later, it is an option.

Playing with your current gear till you hit a wall, then overcoming it is often what I do. However, don't get a lot of different gear until HR as your LR armor will be surprassed. You can safely max out a set of LR armor to keep you going, but don't become a collector in LR with several sets that become useless later.

How do I know when "High Rank" off cially begins? When that "Under Development" Section opens up in the forge?

I rushed my way to High Rank, and then I went back and did all of the optional Low Rank quests that grant canteen and farm upgrades.

You hit High Rank after you confront Zorah Magdaros the second time, and the game will congratulate you upon reaching it.

This. He said alot, but this. I'm too now starting Coral, don't get to play as often as I want to. But from past MH experiences, I always farm a spot I'm comfortable with and build the gear for it. So when I'm ready to advance through the game I can do so with ease.

I am guessing most players will never see later high rank, especially not on pc.

Its like mythic WOW raiding, very very few people do it, and the great majority of players just stick to LFR.

I tell you what, Diablos will certainly seperate the weak from the strong. Hes the one that taught me the difference between normal 3 ammo and piercing 2 ammo. Oh and how to dodge with a bowgun lol.

I have to say, Diablos with Gunlance was very 'lol' compared the Hammer I was used to. With a Gunlance you just wait with shield and tank anything he throws at you and then whack away at him :p

Well, the LR one so far at least :)

Lol... I was thinking that the entire time while reading this thread...

We wanted to progress together but here we are sitting with our thumbs up our butts cause we can't even finish a single mission in multiplayer.
