Lost progress due to crash
I thought the game would save whenever something of note happened, but apparently it only saves when you return from a hunt or expedition. I went on the expedition to the second map after the last Zorah Magdaros mission. I probably ran around for an hour just farming the new mining nodes, killing some monsters, getting destroyed between Bazelgeuse and Diablos. Then I was somehow one-shot for 100+ damage by Kulu-Ya-Ku's jump attack with the rock. It has never done that much damage before by FAR. I currently have 170 defence, probably 100 more than the first time I met it. Does monster stats get boosted after that story mission?
Either way, my game crashed immediately after I got knocked out, and I found myself back in town before the expedition even started.
Surely the developers would think to do better, right?... right?

I will give you some tips as I have played a few thousand hours total across all the MH games and a few hundred in the PS4 version.

I do not think you can save mid mission, So you should be going in doing a few laps then leaving for a few reasons.

First for the save reason, You do not wanna risk losing everything you have gathered do to a crash, power outage or any other reason.

Second your end mission box has a limit to items it can hold so if you sit in a expedition for 5 hours killing the mobs after the first three or so you kill you will no longer get mission rewards for killing them outside of the carves making it not worth it unless you are super over geared and can kill them in like 1 min.

Third, your armor is really not that high for being in high rank with 170 you have about 34 armor a part that's like starting high rank.

Fourth, to go to my third point and answer your question yes once you hit "High rank" the games really starts, Up until that point you are pretty much in the tutorial mode of the game where the monsters are the more base version and hit no where near as hard and have less HP.

Now you mention that he hit you for over 100 damg so I want to ask, Are you eating before your missions for the HP boost and are you doing the optional missions/ These are very good to do as they aid you in the end game by providing additional stats and boost allowing you to reach 200 HP max I think (100 base + 50 food + 50 HP gear / gems)

You can manually save the game from the options. Not sure if you can do this during a hunt or expedition though.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Thank you! I did not see that the expedition was high rank. I always eat before heading out, but after getting knocked out, even if you can eat again, you for some reason do not get bonus HP from eating. I farmed some Zorah SOS and got everything except for the leggings, but I read that the gem has an 8% drop chance so I don't think I'll go for it. Either way, I got 200+ armour now and should be a bit more tanky. Still, that bird hit me for way more than the other monsters there did that run, even direct hits from Jyuratodus. I guess I'll just play defensively while he carries that rock, lol.
