No, in other monster hunter games you could but you also had to waste slots on paintballs, pick axes, fishing poles and bug nets.
In this one you just have to fast travel to camp and drop off stuff in the tent.

Max slot is 24, and there's no way to increase it. Your item box, on the other hand, has unlimited storage. Go back to camp and empty your pouch in the tent if you're trying to farm materials.

If gathering is what you want, probably monster hunting isn't a priority and you can leave everything off your bag except a powercharm and a megapot stack. Should give you more than enough space to gather everything including drops from small monsters and perhaps even one large monster.
