Upgrading bone weapons
I'm new to this game. My question is how I can upgrade my bone weapons. I have all the materials needed for the upgrades, but I can't. There is a red message saying "can't upgrade to this node". Can anybody enlighten me?

You need a weapon on the previous tier to upgrade to that node.

i might be wrong but are you trying to upgrade from an ore weapon to a bone weapon?there are lines in the upgrade tree that dictates what can be upgraded into what,it no big problem just forge a new bone weapon and upgrade it to the second tier bone weapon if that is your problem

You can't just jump all over the tree from any spot. If you can't upgrade to that node, you either A. Haven't completed the upgrade paths before that node or B. You've advanced your weapon too far and either need to downgrade it back to a previous state, or just buy a new weapon.

You can't upgrade to bone from iron, need to buy or craft the first bone tier separately.

Look at where the white lines are pointing, if they go down a level on the previous grade, you'l need to down grade to move onto the next tier. If there's a question mark on the next weapon then you've yet to unlock that tier.

You can only upgrade down the same branches of a particular weapon tree.

For example, if you're trying to upgrade a Bone Horn III, you can only upgrade it to a Blazing Horn I or a Hard Bone Horn I since both of those upgrades branches off the same node.

On the other hand, you can't upgrade a Bone Horn III to a Blooming Horn I because those are on different branches, even though they're both in the bone horn tree.

You'd need to either make a new Bone Horn II or roll back your Bone Horn III upgrade in order to go down the Blooming Horn branch.

The forging/upgrading menu is a bit on the unintuitive side but often the item you want to upgrade, whether equipped or in the storage box, will be somewhere else in the list and can be found by right bumpering a few times.
You have to go to the upgrade option at the smithy. You cannot do it at the forge selection.

you need to be a higher level to use a higher ranked weapon, or complete the missions prior...

I upgrade my weapons with Smithy. I have a Bone Hatchets I, but I can't upgrade it to Bone Hatchets II. Do I need to complete the ore part first or what?

No, as others have said, just follow the white lines in the upgrade tree. Think you have to progress the story missions sometimes to unlock the next upgrade (don't quote me on this though as I've only played about 10 hours and currently got my twin blades to 3rd bone upgrade).

So I was having this same issue. If you are new to the game the upgrade menu can be a little deceiving (because you actually own one of all weapon types to begin with). When I first opened the menu it looked like you pick a weapon category to upgrade. But you actually have to pick the specific weapon you want to upgrade.
For example if you have multiple Hammers, there will be more hammer icons further to the right in the "Upgrade Equipment" menu and as you hover over them they will display which of your hammers you are selecting.
So you have to find your bone weapon in the "Upgrade Equipment" menu, select that, then the upgrade tree for it will be usable.

To make the menu easier to navigate, once Ive decided what weapon type/s I want to use, I sell all the other weapon types in my equipment box, then they dont clog up the Upgrade menu.
And if you decide later you want to use a weapon type you sold, the base versions are super cheap to buy/forge anyway.
