Is there an actual tier of armor (Light, Medium, Heavy) ?

No but some do have more DEF then others but their is no weight system or armor catagory.

There really isn't an armor tier list, just as Keagian said, just some armor has more def than others, however and I assume it's still like this like it was in the older games (I play gen, and about to get GenU for switch) There are the two types, Gunner and Blademaster armor, Gunner provides more elemental defense, because elemental attacks are more ranged base, while Blademaster gets more Physical defense. but yeah, if there was a tier list like that then the game would be like Dark Souls with roll iframes and such, thankfully it's only the evasion skill that affects that in MH.

No, but certain weapons have increases to defense. So if you want higher defense build those weapons. Like Baroth weapons.
