Do monsters heal?
So far I've only solo'd anju/barroth/jagras , but I can't tell when they go running how urgently I should be chasing after them. Do I have as much time as I want, other than the mission timer, or do they regenerate health if I don't continue engaging?

When monsters go to their nest and sleep yeah they heal. Only to a certain point though, never back to full or anything like that.

Yes, if you let them sleep they will heal.
When they eat or sleep yes. Eating also restores their stamina and allows them to immediately enrage.

This person speaks truth.

The only time you'll really have to worry about a monster healing is if you need to capture it. Capturing is only possible at a certain HP threshold, and if the monster returns to its nest and sleeps to heal past that threshold, you might waste a trap/tranqs because of it - mainly when it takes you a while to get to where it's sleeping

this is easily solved by thwapping it on the nose with a rolled up newspaper a few times before a capture attempt, though

thanks, I haen't figured out capturing yet. I got him down to the skulls as they were limping and spammed the capture net on their body but so far it hasn't done anything heh do you have to get to a certain part in the story to unlock that ability?

While I'm not 100% on this, I think they can also heal when they eat another monster.

I may have to do some research on it, but after I was fighting Great Jagras (who had visible battle damage) he ate a smaller monster and his body damage healed. That may just be due in part to him ballooning up and it changed his textures.

You have to use a trap first then use any Tranq weapon (Bombs are best.) Shock Traps (thunder bugs and trap kits from the provisioner) have a short trap time, while pit traps have a longer (needs Spider webs and ivy though.)

You use a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap and Tranq Bombs or Tranq Ammo to catch it while it's in the trap.

yeah the capture net is only for the small animals you see running around. they definitely could have made that more clear, i've seen people say they've tried to use it on big things super often

I'll have to see where to buy trap kits. I saw that I needed them to craft, but I wasn't sure where they were. Mission wise, I"m just past barroth. It did seem too good to be true to have an unlimited capture net at the start of the game

If its like the older games, eating will not restore health.
(there were a few monsters who can steal items and heal themselselves with it but i dont know if such a monster is present in MHW)

The captureNET is only there to cap small animals.
You can buy trapkits at the market in town, they are there from the beginning.

If mission requires you to capture something items needed for that - trap and tranq bombs - will be in box in camp. If you want to be able to capture them freely you need to craft them yourself.

Just to be clear, when a monster runs off during a fight, in general, there is no urgemcy for chasing him? I suaully stop, sharpen my sword, heal, even gather needed ingredients while he runs. He only heals when he sleeps (or eats?)

yup. you can read on monster guide. Mostly heal when they resting on their nest. But some like elder dragon nergigante it can regenerate and make it skin much more harder and make your weapon bounce.
