Is Kirin in the base game or was it added later on?

then you will later unlock it in HR, then tempered!, ArchTempered is not in yet.

Yes, Kirin is in. Just killed it with a friend like 20 minutes ago. We are at HR10, and you have to do all the capture optional quests.

He's also a pain in the arse to kill if your not geared right. I usually go bowgun for him as its a hell of alot easier than trying to melee it. Slicing ammo aimed at its horn will kill it eventually, but as most ranged weapons are fairly weak it takes for friggin ever to kill it.

Ranged weapons aren't really that weak - slice ammo got nerfed massively back when, so that might be one reason.
