Certain Weapons better at breaking parts?
Basically the title. I've not played any Monster Hunter games til now, only played the Dauntless beta some. In Dauntless certain weapons were better at breaking parts, is it the same in the Monster Hunter universe?

You need a weapon with slash damage to cut off a tail, cannot do it with blunt.

Awesome, it sounds like the same way it is in Dauntless then for the most part. Thanks! :)

Certain ammo types like the slicer ammo can replace the job of the Long Sword in cutting tails. Not sure about blunt but I think its piercer ammo.

Depends on the ammo. Slicing is the only ammo that does slash damage. Sticky and spread do large amounts of blunt, the rest of the ammo is blunt as well but it wont be noticeable unless you're solo

There is also a perk you can get later called Partbreaker which does exactly what you think it does.
