Go youtube and search "beginners guide or things to know before getting into mhw", try to avoid spoilers, half the fun is the discovery and I do hate being turned off by the perspective of others.
Im by no means totally familiar, another month or two perhaps haha
Console player here. Play around with all of 14 of the weapon types and dind a weapon you enjoy. Build whatever armor you want in low rank but don't grind for completion. I'd normally focus on attack skills but it really doesn't matter early on. High rank is where the game fully opens up. Focus on grinding for whatever you desire.
On upgrading: Keep your weapon up to date as much as you can. I'd focus on one or two weapon types and make a few as you wish (different elements, statuses). I wouldn't go all out on it during low rank though. With armor, upgrade your low rank armors if you want more defence but high rank is where upgrading is really worthwhile. Make sure to do the bounties as you hunt to get armor sphere for armor upgrades. They will add up over time. Don't be afraid to us them! They eventually diminish in usefulness as the game goes on (more and more types will be added as you progress)
If you need some weapon recommendation, Sword and shield is good for quick attacks and quick item usage. Long sword is pretty basic and easy to use (though some time to master). I always suggest Lance since countering can help you learn monster patterns ( don't let the slow speed fool you! It is actually on of the quickest to charge around the field!)
Some guides on youtube i'd recommend are Arekkz and GaijinHunter's weapon guide. Social Dissonance also has some videos and good Low Rank and High Rank armors, at least for the story portion.
Enjoy!
