Recommended progression for a beginner?
First time MH player here. How should I go about upgrading stuff? Anything I should know? Maybe some recommended guides?

Im new myself, from what ive experienced you can save some matts by not needing to craft gear right off the bat, creatures will gradually get more difficult. The crafting list will expand pretty quick after first few missions and elements arent an early issue, ive seen none in 10hrs of play. Personally im trying to keep it simple until forced to delve, pick 2 weapon mains to start (really liking dual blades for speed and agility), its all personal pref beyond this which is great.

Go youtube and search "beginners guide or things to know before getting into mhw", try to avoid spoilers, half the fun is the discovery and I do hate being turned off by the perspective of others.

Im by no means totally familiar, another month or two perhaps haha

Get what ever you can and do the story quest, and get yourself to 6 stars mission ASAP, thats where the game truely begin.

It doesn't matter which gear you have. 20 def for each is enough for you to reach high rank.

TL;DR get through low rank and learn the game. Get to high rank and prepare to put your knowledge to the test. Look at Gaijinhunter or Arrekz's MHW weapon guides.

Console player here. Play around with all of 14 of the weapon types and dind a weapon you enjoy. Build whatever armor you want in low rank but don't grind for completion. I'd normally focus on attack skills but it really doesn't matter early on. High rank is where the game fully opens up. Focus on grinding for whatever you desire.

On upgrading: Keep your weapon up to date as much as you can. I'd focus on one or two weapon types and make a few as you wish (different elements, statuses). I wouldn't go all out on it during low rank though. With armor, upgrade your low rank armors if you want more defence but high rank is where upgrading is really worthwhile. Make sure to do the bounties as you hunt to get armor sphere for armor upgrades. They will add up over time. Don't be afraid to us them! They eventually diminish in usefulness as the game goes on (more and more types will be added as you progress)

If you need some weapon recommendation, Sword and shield is good for quick attacks and quick item usage. Long sword is pretty basic and easy to use (though some time to master). I always suggest Lance since countering can help you learn monster patterns ( don't let the slow speed fool you! It is actually on of the quickest to charge around the field!)

Some guides on youtube i'd recommend are Arekkz and GaijinHunter's weapon guide. Social Dissonance also has some videos and good Low Rank and High Rank armors, at least for the story portion.

Enjoy!
