Volumetric Rendering is GOOD!
The difference between low and off completely is like 1-2 frames per second. It's the higher setting that incur the huge performance penalty, and the difference between low and highest can only be seen in the resolution of the volumetric effects, in very specific areas, and even then the difference isn't enough to warrant the 20 frame difference. Having it on low allows you the performance as well as the atmospheric effects the volumetrics add to the game, especially at night with warm light sources, and in the thickly forested areas.

I originally thought it added nothing but a hazy fog to the game but after playing it and seeing the difference in person, I see that it does a lot more for the game, and it's especially evident in Astera at night time. For example, look towards the boat hull ceiling of the product stock market, where there is warm light occluded by the hull of the boat ceiling, which disappears when volumetrics are turned off. The volumetrics also add godrays in some forested areas, too, and generally the hazy fog adds to the depth of the game and makes the levels feel real and big, like it's a real tropical environment.

So rather than turning it off completely, I recommend at least trying the low setting.

Nah brah. I like to be able to see clearly, even if that means I get to see the pop-in and bad textures loading in at far distances. Wish I could turn of DoF and motion blur too.

But, you CAN see clearly ... Unless you're hard of sight, I don't see the problem.

If you don't think volumetrics obscure light, you don't understand what volumetrics are

Maybe it's you who doesn't undertstand what volumetric lighting is. It's literally a light volume; a physical model of lighting, such as that used in Fallout 4, and other games. It can simulate god rays, and atmospheric lighting. When you remove it, you literally remove the lighting from a lot of places in the game, which you can see most at night. Do I go and take screenshots?

Whether you like it or not, that wasn't my point. I mean to say that volumetric lighting isn't bad, and you don't have to be rid of it completely for good performance. So if people like the look of it turned on vs off, they can have it on low without much difference from highest. https://imgur.com/a/24UNLjf

whether i turn off my volumetric rendering or setting it to max i dont get any fps gain, stuck at 40~50fps. i guess its because my A8-6600 processor.

Major FAIL.

Once I turned it off and saw how much clearer and better looking the game was I left it off. It is a dumb effect adding fog, lowering visibility while eating fps

Lol are you guys seriously confusing volumetric fog rendering with volumetric lighting? You can turn it on and off while ingame look at the lighting, doesn't change a bit. Only adds a thick mist which takes way too much resources to render.

I'm with OP on this one. The fog really enhances the atmosphere of a lot of areas and the Low setting gives practically the same visuals as Highest with a fraction of the cost to FPS. I'm keeping mine on Low; the graphics don't look right without the fog. It's like turning off the shadows in a horror game.

Yes it does change. Are you blind? The god rays disappear, so do the ambient lighting models. It's like no one has eyes in this forum. https://imgur.com/a/24UNLjf

By the by, volumetric fog and volumetric lighting are interchangeable terms referring to the exact same thing. The thing is, volumetric lighting can be used to create a foggy look. Doesn't mean it's all it's good for.

If you get rid of the 'fog', you also get rid of godrays and ambient lighting in forests and in places like where I showed in my screenshots. See the hull of the boat, and the subtle godrays in the hunter's room.

I think later in the game, when people get to places like the Coral Highlands, they'll be missing out on some nice visuals because they opted to turn off volumetrics completely. https://i.imgur.com/7oMXKza.png

You can also see the same scene very clearly in this small video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6avECCcUsQ0

I agree it adds god rays but not worth over clear textures and deep, vibrant colors that I get when I turn this thing off.

That's fine. I just want to make people aware that adding a fog isn't all that the volumetric lighting does, and that if anyone DOES like the atmospheric fog, they don't have to turn it off completely to get a good framerate. Low looks like High, without the huge performance hit. You could also combine it with a Reshade filter like "Colourfulness" to try and make it more colourful whilst on.

Yeah the game is extremely CPU limited. Hammers my i5 8600k to 70-80% a lot of the time and I have it overclocked to 4.5Ghz.

With a 1070 i see a 10% increase in gpu use from turning volumetric rendering off to low. And still i am debating withing using it or not, because i see the godrays but at the same time the washout colors are too much for my like.
I am more worried about the fact that the ps4 pro version appears to have better textures for some reason.
