Cutting / Blunt weapons and crafting
Hi, I'm new to MH and trying to understand some mechanics while waiting for the release.

I was wondering, if i choose to use only one weapon and playing solo, will I be able to get all the components for the craft when hunting ?
Or do I have to use a cutting weapon to get some and a blunt weapon for others ?

Or do i get some components at the end of the hunt regardless if I did cut a tail or broke any other part ?

I would appreciate if someone could explains this to me

Thats not a bad question actually.

I know generally cutting weapons are supposed to be attacking the tail and blunt weapons attacking the face, since cutting weapons can knock the tail off and blunt weapons break horns and stagger.

But I unfortunately have no idea if you can get the tail with blunt or vice versa, anyone know this for sure?

you can't cut tails with blunt weapons or break certain parts with cut weapons, but capturing the monster gives you a chance to get part loot even if said part wasn't cut.

... at least that's how it worked in mhfu

you can't cut tails with blunt, but you can still capture monsters to get tail's carve material

Good to know.

There are "investigation" missions that can reward you any part of the monster when completing them as well

There usually exists certain carves you can only get by carving a severed tail which requires a cutting weapon to sever - the reason why I don't use hammers as much as I would otherwise (they actually have an axe looking end-game hammer but it doesn't allow you to sever tails, I was very sad)

However you can get "tails" and whatnot from post-hunt rewards, especially if you captured the creature, even without severing the tail.

Consider severing a tail more akin to "guaranteed" or "bonus loot" more than anything.

I love hammers. They're so free and flexible, with good damage and fun head smashing, but using them in solo isn't a great idea, they're more support for KO'ing creatures onto the ground than anything else - they're very efficient at mounting monsters too.

Definitely recommend a cutting weapon if you're playing solo, assuming you get worked up about not severing tails and such.

You still have a very small chance at getting a tail through a body carve, but cutting the tail off still gives you the best chance at getting a tail part. Capturing the monster also gives additional chances to get one in the end-of-hunt rewards IIRC.

Also, as mentioned above, Investigation hunts give you additional rewards at the end of the hunt, and each reward gives you an additional chance at getting a rare part like a tail. As a blunt weapon user, investigation rewards are how I got the majority of my tail pieces.

Oki so, great question.

You need a cutting weapon to cut a tail. Everything else can be "broken" off with any type of damage, blunt, cutting or shot at. Blunt weapons build up exhaust in the monster, meaning it just gets tired faster, and can build KO damage to topple it briefly.
Hammer, and Hunting Horn take priority when hitting the head of the mon when it's toppled. Charge Blade can also KO, but it has to be an Impact phial charge blade.

If you plan on going Heavy Bowgun for example, there's slicing ammo that is meant for cutting tails, and solo it might be helpful, but when playing with people you should be focusing on dps and let other weapons get the tail. Still, you can get tails as a HBG user. Hammers and Hunting Horns, though, cannot cut a tail BUT you can still get one in the rewards.

Breaking a part makes it more likely to get a specific drop, but it's not necessary. There is an ingame barebones wiki detailing drops, elemental weaknesses and things like that that you might find useful.

Having good charisma and expensive cologne also increases your chance of getting tail.

Thanks all for the answers (Even Greb, had a good laught :) )

Ok so cutting. capturing ... missions.. It looks like there is several ways to get what you need.

I'm not sure yet which weapon i will use but it seems it doesn't really matter in the end.
Can't wait to start playing this game !

As long as that one weapon of choice is a lance or gunlance, which does both, slashing and blunt damage(but with no KO), then yes.

That is, if lance/gunlance still work as they used to in previous games.

Otherwise, you'll need cutting weapons for tails and sometimes blunt weapons for cracking other hard parts.

Yeah good point actually. Some monsters respond better to blunt damage than cutting damage, such as the head fringe/crest of the Barroth - bladed weapons below a set sharpness will bounce off, blunt weapons won't until even lower etc.

There are definitely more times you can sever parts than you can smash them apart, though. The hammer sure is fun though. Easy to use too, and can be powered up for bonus damage, etc. It's a good starter weapon - naturally migrates to the Greatsword, since you'll be used to charging up your attacks and delivering mighty blows etc.

And we all know damage is the only thing that matters :steammocking:

I don't know if the damage types are still the same in MHW as they are in older games but I do know that lance can KO with the shield. So can Sword & Shield. While I have been able to break and cut everything with a Lance, I've also been able to do that with other weapons like the Charge blade, Switch Axe, Greatsword and Gunlance.

I think there were 4 damage types:
Cutting - For Severing
Blunt - Better for breaking
Impact - Combination of Cut/Blunt damage
Shot - which I have no clue about because I'm a melee guy lol

It feels like a lot of weapons fall in the impact catergory in MHW
