Where there's a fire there is smoke
And, in that smoke, from this day onwards my people will crouch and conspire and plot and plan
Until the inevitable day of Man's downfall, the day of the lighting in the sky when your cities lie buried under radioactive rubble, and the sea will be a dead see, and the land will be a wasteland, from which I shall lead my people out of their captivity
And we will build our own cities, raise our own armies, our own dynasty, our own religion, in which there will be no place for humans except to serve our ends. And that day, is upon you, NOW!!
Who is going to feed you? Who is going to pet you? Who is going to play in the footbath with you?
edit: oh wait
im a free strong willed independent palico I need no man
i hate you
Too late...

It's a felyne scam. We pay them to 'work' for us, getting us into fights with monsters... who obviously pay them to cart our smelly carcasses away.
What? How many times have you carted... because they wouldn't snap you out of a stun? You probably didn't see Nergigante winking at your meow... "don't help him... going to do a nice special on him... bonus tip for uber cart"
Honestly though... can you blame them? Think of the costumes we make them wear... cruel and unusual fashion!
There's often someone they refer to as their master, which is particularly notable in palicoes as they are designated hunting partners (because "palico" is a role, not a species), but it's more of a master-apprentice deal. This is not a requirement, as you can also see them being put on equal standing with humans or even running their own businesses (e.g. the Street Cook in 4U, he had no known affiliation before joining the Caravan, and he's still getting paid per meal afterwards). They're seemingly allowed to take up any profession they want, from the mundane stuff like working in kitchens and farms, to more independent ventures like treasure hunting (i.e. Trenya).
The societies we've seen so far in Monster Hunter are pretty accepting of anyone who wants to enter and they treat all kinds of people with equal respect, nobody has been shown getting unfair treatment just because of what they are. Even shakalaka (and, by extension, gajalaka) are welcome as citizens if they can be civil. Cha-Cha and Kayamba proved that.
Probably best illustrated by the fact that they were originally called "felyne comrades", not "palico".
Boy, wait until you'll find out about the hunters job.
