MHGU - Worth it after playing World?
Hi guys,

I'm considering getting a Switch for MHGU. Now, I understand that the old engine games are more clunky than World; I have MH4U on my 3DS which I loved, but I find it pretty hard to play on a small screen for extended periods of time. That said, I loved the 'old game feel' / character of MH4U and fully enjoyed playing the game.

So my question is:

Is MHGU worth getting, even if you've played around 400 hours on World? I'm not worried about the old clunky gameplay, I'm asking this purely from a 'is it worth it for the content' PoV. Does MHGU have a transmog / layered armour system?

I also like the idea that I'd be able to bring a portable version of MH with me on a Switch.

Of course I wouldn't be buying a Switch only for MHGU, there's other titles I want to play, but MHGU will be one of the main games I use the console for.

I know I can just Google a lot of this, but I'm interested in hearing it from the horses mouths lol.

Thoughts?

Can't play as a Palico in World, so I'd say GU is worth a look for that alone.

Beyond that, there are loads of monsters that are absent in World (Gore Magala, Tetsucabra, Seltas Queen, Nerscylla, Gammoth, Ahtal-Ka, etc.).

I remember fighting Gore, Seltas Queen and Nerscylla on MH4U but it was so hard to see what was going on with the tiny screen lol. I think I'd really enjoy fighting them again without being so gimped by the screen size.

oh hoho. Older MHs are so much more wacky. Doing a flex in front of a charging bulldrome anyone? :lunar2019piginablanket:

Oh yeah, also they totally overhauled Lavasioth for its MHW appearance, so you'll find it very different in GU. For one it didn't have the lava armor mechanic, that was originally Agnaktor's thing.

Is the player base for GU still kicking? I remember trying to play a few months back and there wasnt really that many people. Atleast unless they were all in g rank (which i think is the case) or there is more content than players

I don't know about the rest but I know I ain't playing MP ever since Nintendo implemented that dumb online subscription service. Probably one of the few things I hated about playing on the Switch or any other console for that matter. The 3DS may have been small but it didn't have paywall for playing MP so I was able to fully enjoy MH4U's MP.

Crap didn't know Nintendo made you pay for multiplayer now. I remember back on the old Wii and Wii U just being able to hop online and play Mario Kart with everyone for free. That massively sucks. That's what I've always hated about Sony or Microsoft consoles.

Does GU support local multiplayer (switch to switch)?

There is local wireless MP but I haven't personally tried it so I can't say how functional it is.

Ah well at least that's there. I usually only play with friends otherwise I solo so that would be the only multiplayer Id use.

I play both, honestly, both is good, but proceed with caution, I personally do not like using controllers to play MH, love KMB.

Besides that, I feel that MHGU is way better than MHW. Just my opinion

Like what others have said. GU has a lot of content. I have both MHW and GU, and I still come back to it from time to time, because of the monsters and the variety in weapon and armour designs. Also, Switch has a larger screen than the 3DS, and you can play in docked mode, so it shouldn't be too bad to deal with.

GU does have transmog, and it's probably better than World's transmog in that you can transmog pretty much any armour piece without using mods, but the downside is that you have to spend materials everytime when you attach that piece to something new, instead of spending materials once to unlock it.

If you want to know if you can solo everything. It's possible, but if you want to solo the EX deviants or G-rank hyper Silver Los, you'll need to be skilled. I've solo'd to G4 (including the G4 urgent) on two different characters (male and female, for fashion purposes), but man, I can't do hyper Silver Los lol, it's so aggravating.

You can also play as a Palico (or prowler), if that's your thing

Hard disagree on the transmog system - world's is way, WAY better. Especially being as we 're getting all of the old armors as layered armors coming up here soon (we already have a lot of low ranks.)

Fair enough. Luckily I find controllers 100% easier for MH. Anything else is M&KB for me but I learned the game on a controller so that's not an issue!

To be fair he did say it was better in the way that you have access to pretty much all the armours for transmog. But yeah from what I hear, world's is much more user friendly. We just need more armour sets ;)

World is simpler, but has WAY less options. Its really not better in the end, especially with the limited options we currently have.

Yes, there is always lobbies, at least in G rank going.

100% ignored the fact that we're going to be getting all of the armors as layered in incoming updates. World's system is literally OBJECTIVELY more flexible then gen u's system.

The only reason it has "less options" is because there are less monsters in world - but again, in world we'll have all the armors in world available as layered armors soon. It's not a slap-on collab title like gen was - they literally had the frontier team work on gen because they just needed another MH game out during world's developement lmao.

There's a decent player base still. It's nowhere near as massive as World, and you won't always have people playing with you at lower ranks. A lot of people tend to just want to do the key quests, maybe a few deviants but if you want to get 100% completion it is pretty difficult unless you find a group to do it with.
