MHGU - Worth it after playing World?
Hi guys,

I'm considering getting a Switch for MHGU. Now, I understand that the old engine games are more clunky than World; I have MH4U on my 3DS which I loved, but I find it pretty hard to play on a small screen for extended periods of time. That said, I loved the 'old game feel' / character of MH4U and fully enjoyed playing the game.

So my question is:

Is MHGU worth getting, even if you've played around 400 hours on World? I'm not worried about the old clunky gameplay, I'm asking this purely from a 'is it worth it for the content' PoV. Does MHGU have a transmog / layered armour system?

I also like the idea that I'd be able to bring a portable version of MH with me on a Switch.

Of course I wouldn't be buying a Switch only for MHGU, there's other titles I want to play, but MHGU will be one of the main games I use the console for.

I know I can just Google a lot of this, but I'm interested in hearing it from the horses mouths lol.

Thoughts?

If you loved 4U, I don't see why you wouldn't like GU. It does have transmog, but the system is different. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you bind a look to a specific armor piece, it isn't as simple as just changing layered slots.

Right. Content-wise, it's supposed to be pretty great from what I've seen. Any particular monsters on GU that stand out above the rest, that aren't featured in World?

Yeah, it's that. And it's something you need to grind for, only available in G Rank, and you can't make Blademaster armors look like Gunner ones and vice versa.

That's cool then. G-rank is the endgame where most of the pain fun will be so that's where it counts.

Deviants, Valstrax, the Fated 4, and Ahtal-Ka. Past that, nothing really too interesting.

As long as you don't get too hung up on the quality of life updates and the graphics from World, you should have a ton of fun in GU. It has a TON of content, that's for sure. Pretty sure Generations invented transmog for the series. I think what Maelynx is saying is true, you basically have to make the armor piece you want to use as "layered", then use some resources to bind it to the armor you want to wear. Been awhile since I played it.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. The roster of monsters in MHGU is MUCH bigger than both MHW + IB combined. All the fan favourites are in the game and the flagship monster is really cool to fight as well.

Like others have said, there is a dedicated transmog system but be prepared to grind "twice" as hard. You'll know what I mean by that once u start getting into it.

G-Rank is the equivalent of Master rank in IB but be warn that there is no solo scaling for this one. ALL monsters have MP health so it might prove a lot more time consuming but it's still definitely doable.

Also, there are collaboration quests in MHGU that you won't find on the other games. They're not timed-events so u can do them whenever u want. My personal favourite is the Ace Attorney collaboration quest.

Like what others have said. GU has a lot of content. I have both MHW and GU, and I still come back to it from time to time, because of the monsters and the variety in weapon and armour designs. Also, Switch has a larger screen than the 3DS, and you can play in docked mode, so it shouldn't be too bad to deal with.

GU does have transmog, and it's probably better than World's transmog in that you can transmog pretty much any armour piece without using mods, but the downside is that you have to spend materials everytime when you attach that piece to something new, instead of spending materials once to unlock it.

If you want to know if you can solo everything. It's possible, but if you want to solo the EX deviants or G-rank hyper Silver Los, you'll need to be skilled. I've solo'd to G4 (including the G4 urgent) on two different characters (male and female, for fashion purposes), but man, I can't do hyper Silver Los lol, it's so aggravating.

You can also play as a Palico (or prowler), if that's your thing

No joke. I think I spent a solid week trying to solo the G5 Silverwind Nargacuga and even ended up running out of time a few instances. It was both frustrating and oh so satisfying to finally beat it.

MHGU was a blast to the point I got a Switch just to play the import, not knowing if/when they would make an English version of the game.I completely skipped MH4 basically it was only on that tiny 3DS screen.

Worth it , its basically a combination of the 4 previous generations combined into one.

Totally worth it !

except you do not get to fight the sea creatures from MH3 and MH3Ultimate Underwater in MHGU.

They do have Lagiacrus, but only on land. And not as fun as the primarily-on-land Ivory Lagiacrus from 3U.

Thanks guys appreciate the info. I think I'll grab it and a Switch next time I'm out.

MHGU is amazing. Worth it alone for the high contrast but easily parsed art style. MHW, though realistically pretty, it is bit busy with particles, bloom, explosions etc.
NoobMaster69 Feb 19, 2020 @ 8:24pm
Yeah I've watched some videos and it's quite clear what is going on in the fight due to how limited the effects are.

Can't play as a Palico in World, so I'd say GU is worth a look for that alone.

Beyond that, there are loads of monsters that are absent in World (Gore Magala, Tetsucabra, Seltas Queen, Nerscylla, Gammoth, Ahtal-Ka, etc.).
