just curious no big whoop I"m never creating my own mission again lol I don't think my sos flares show up on the board

the palico is more like a support, give it a sleep or paralyze weapon and level up the wigor wasp item as it can heal you 1 time when you die wich is practicaly 4 deaths for a mission and not just 3

tyvm do I have to actually do something to level up the vigor wasp?

For the standard version the palico gear aren't really that great, Believe the healing one was overall the best you could pick or the one that gave buffs. With Iceborne it changed, where shield stooge at level 10 and up you could have the palico setup a decoy that would drag the attention of monster pretty damn often and will take a lot of hits before breaking.
The healing one would allow you to survive fatal damage but it takes time to get up so more often than not the monster can kill you as you get up. The meowotol, the one they throw bombs would give you a pillar of firework. Heard it does decent damage if you can lock the enemy in that place. The other are useful too

Plunderblade best palico. All them shinies and mantles at the end of the quest.

Palico attack the monster when you engage the monster in close radius from the monster. If you use melee weapons, you will see your cat actively battle the monster. If you are ranged, shooting from far enough, the cat will instead hang back with you, following you closely.

if you want a cat to really support you as a heavy bowgun, have him level up the shieldspire tool.
it does attack,it just doesnt show the damage number except explosion damage and i think poison

The Palico is not there to be a replacement hunter, they are there to support you. With the addition of the IB Tailraider Signal, you can also call in an additional Palico Helper and a Tailraider creature as well. They will attack whenever they haven't got much else to do.

-- By a Palico just being there, the monster will flit between two targets (rather than just you) -- three if you have a Shieldspire Palico as it will plant a decoy in-between taunting the monster itself, which is a great distraction for, say, HBG looking to shoot anything other than the face. The monster will spend a lot more time hitting other things rather than going for that Hunter.

-- Then you have the Coral gadget which will buff you like a Horn User. Earplugs, Stun Resist, Stamina, Damage, Affinity, Defense and other great perks will be applied to you throughout the fight. Great for a lot of situations - not to mention the Sonic Gong which provides a frequent double-interrupt on the monster(s) and will even drop Guiding Land material from the monster every time it is used (provided it got stunned by the Gong).

-- Then you have the Vigorwasp which, shock horror, will top you up frequently and even bring you back from a feint. This is probably the best option for Hunters getting to grips with the game or in situations where you absolutely have to avoid feinting at all costs. Once they get comfortable, I would usually recommend swapping to others, but there's no denying that the Vigorwasp is always a handy option when you just want to get topped up mid-fight without relying on self-healing as much. This falls out of favour later with weapon-regen augments and other things.

-- I used the Trapper Gadget pre-Iceborne primarily as I used to go on obnoxiously long hunts and their traps can be used to capture monsters (so I wouldn't have to head to a camp as much to restock my supplies). The frequent flash-bugs and shock-traps are also very handy for creating damage-windows while the monster was controlled -- plus the fact that when a Palico uses their trap, it does not put your requestable trap on cooldown, meaning you could chain them together. Alas, with the emphasis on trap/blind resistances and the higher frequency of enraged monsters, this gadget fell out of favour with me, but still very useful when you just want to torment a monster with constant chains of CC (or a free capture trap).

-- Plunderblade is a no-brainer when you want to hunt monsters for specific materials. There is a chance this gadget might get it/them for you, either through looting what the Palico plunders during its mount-animation or from whatever it manually steals from the monster with its ranged-attacks. Great for Hunters who are already super-comfortable and just want a bit of extra wealth/materials along the way.

-- Meowlotov Cocktail is a natural choice when all you really want is more damage from your cat. It will add its own explosive barrels to yours when setting up wake-up barrel-bombs, will lob molotovs at the monster during combat, and will occasionally unleash a Meowcano capable of solid damage-over-time if the monster remains in its effect.

Every single Gadget is worth consideration depending on what type of gap in your own game you would like filled.

I tend to go with Coral Orchestra for the resistances, stamina, gong and various other buffs but I'm tempted to go back to the Shield Spire now that I mostly have to contend with all the obnoxious Elder Dragons in AT form. Nice to have them chasing my troupe of Tailraiders or being taunted by my Palico (or its decoy).

thank you all, thank you all, thank you all

i used coral horn until iceborne, however the new gong apparently angers the monster making it less useful

meowlotov with sleep or blast is the way to go
