Progression tips
Hi guys,

I just returned to MHW after a long break, as my friends stopped playing and I had other priorities.

Currently sitting at HR14 as a lancer / gunlancer. (and occasionally GS and HBG, but lances are life). Last Quest I did was slay one of the 3 elder dragons, I think it was Kushala.

Getting back in the game is quite weird with all the focus in iceborne and before I buy the addon a few questions to help a bro out:

I think my HR will jump quite a lot once I end the base game, will there be an event soon where all the quests are available again, as there are some HR50 events that have nice armor and stuff.

Do I need to farm tons on decos in MHW (as RNG is horror in this game) or can I get the same things in Iceborne, too?

What should I do in MHW before moving on to iceborne?

What stuff can I meld to have good chances for better gems, I think I have tons of trash after 150 hours goofing around with all kinds of weapons.

Any other good tips you wanna share?

Thanks in advance

There is an event now where every HR event quest is up. Also ever season there are similar events like now.

Well iceborne added 4* decos so technically you could do iceborne content whiles getting the occasional below 4* deco but if your looking for very specific decos then best to farm them in HR events as to not oversaturate your drop pool.

You can jump start into iceborne after the main story but its largerly your choice how you will deal with being underprepared.

Usually melding for the decos require materials from events so I wouldn't rely too much on that for now

I recommend not buying Iceborne until you have messed around with the base game and done some endgame content, otherwise you can just rush to Iceborne and instantly be op in high rank and have no reason to do any of the base game content anymore. I recommend you reach HR 100+ before you buy Iceborne, also don't use defender gear since it ruins the point of doing anything in the base game. Really upsets me to see all these low hr players far into Iceborne thanks to defender gear, they missed so much content and have no reason to go back to it other than to check it out once, because they don't need the stuff from it.

Thanks for the tips so far. Right now my equip is about as good as it can get at Nergigante / Deviljho level, so there is still quite a lot to do and I think I will get back into MHW first to get my muscle memory and game mechanics back to where they should be.
The defenders things are quite nice, but when it comes to armor I like to combine it more to my playstyle and I feel limited by defender gear here. The weapons are nice additions when it comes to blast, but I want to build a few more lances and gunlances for special encounters as well, even knowing they become obsolete in Iceborne.

Sadly, the event will be over when I have time to finish the game and reach a much higher HR.

So I guess, I will fight some tempered monsters when I am done with the story, get the rest of the missing mantles, my palicos have all the gadgets.

Regarding decos and augmentations I guess I need to read up what is in the game at the moment. A year ago my knowledge was quite up to date, but coming back I realize that I forgot even the most basic things. Stupid adult brain ;)

I truly understand how you feel...
However, do you really want to subject him to an empty 100 ranks of Master rank grinding AFTER he's spent most of his time enjoying what monster hunter is in the base game? I'm going to keep it a G and tell you that a lot of the level 4 jewels are either widely situational or drop very often, or they flat out give it to you in the story.

So if he does what we all did and grind our cheeks until we had toned bodies, that MR 100 grind is going to be him doing almost nothing but going through the motions until he gets something worth doing.

Don't spend too long grinding for decos, its easy to get base game decos with the steam works in Iceborne, just grab the ones for your main weapons, don't grind the same quest 100 times in a week like I did to try and get a release deco like I did. (I didn't get the release deco)

Yeah,

With about 160 hours into the game before my break, I think the base game will entertain me for another 40 hours until my interest in Iceborn becomes to big to wait.

At least I want to be as fit mechanically as I was beforehand before going into master ranks.
Also depends on how fast my friends, one returns on about my progress with 80h in the game, the other brand new, are in catching up.

I guess helping my friend who is new to the game will help me to get my routine back and it is fun to build some LR stuff to be a litte underpowered in encounters, so he can have fun and I do not 3 shot his monsters ;)

With my luck, I will never get the decos for lance and gunlance anyway, but all for HH or sth else I have no interest in playing ;)

Would it make sense to wait with deco farming, get some good MR stuff and then go back to base for quick farm?
