jump off the ledge and cheese it up. horn breaks in 3-4 good hits. lol.
if that isn't working out, one of the ranged weapons turns the fight into easymode. his whole gimmick is that lightning forcefield of his, engaging at long range removes that entire problem. just gotta worry about getting gored by his horn.
Once you figure out how the game wants you to fight him he becomes one of the easier elder dragons. He politely tells you where he wants to put his lightning before he actually puts it there. MR kirin mixes things up a bit with that grid pattern attack but once you get used to it it's not that much more difficult to avoid than the row pattern, barring you getting stunned or walking into another lightning attack (which won't happen that often once you get used to the fight) or knocked around by an interfering monster.
If another monster shows up, just back off for a while. Either it or kirin will leave the area before too long. Monsters don't like getting zapped by kirin much, either.
Position yourself for the draw attack with great sword onto his head, roll, sheathe immediately, repeat.
It does have tells, you just have to get used to them. When it stops to shake it's head randomly, you can get a bit of a charged hit in on it.
You only go for the charged swings when its downed, but you make double sure you hit its horn/head area and nothing else or youve wasted your chance for damage.
Don't be afraid to block it's attacks with your great sword. You can sharpen it. If you need time to do something don't circle kirin, run away from it completely. That causes it to want to charge you but charges don't hurt nearly as much as it's mid range bolts.
Paralysis resistance helps if you are getting hit.
One thing you need for kirin is you need the patience to fight the thing. I have yet to fight master rank kirin, and I haven't fought it with clutch claw so I don't know how different it is. But I'm guessing it's generally the same overall gameplay wise.
I usually save mounts for when it's pissed off because if you can break it's horn while its pissed, it breaks the rage mode I'm pretty certain.
But the most important thing is, dont ever go for a big ♥♥♥♥ damage charge with great sword against kirin unless you are one thousand percent sure it's actually worth it. Otherwise, you stick to simple hit and run tactics until an opening presents itself.
Thunder mantle helps a lot when it's raged because it throws out more lightning and it hurts more in general.
Be careful in that sloped area in coral highlands where it first shows up off of the top of the mountain, that area can work with you or against you depending on how big the kirin is but gs shouldnt have trouble.
Just be patient, pick your hits and when its knocked down, you go for the bigger charged hits but dont wait too long because if it gets up itll move its stupid head outta the way.
Temporal mantle is your friend against kirin moreso than normal because of how erratic it's attacks are and their hitboxes.
If you are lucky enough to be close enough to it when it does its triple line lightning strike move, you can charge attack him then, just dont get greedy.
Range won't automatically protect you, he has some pretty nasty ranged options. Also if you make a mistake you probably die.
