Guard Up Necessary for Lance?
I played lance for almost the entirety of HR before iceborne dropped, and I have since swapped to CB for a change of pace.

I'm looking to make another lance set for MR now, but I know in iceborne they added a guard up function to the super guard.

Do all you lance users still use guard up, or do you just use the new iceborne mechanics instead?

Happy Hunting!

Why not slot it in anyway? You should skip over it unless you're fight something that Guard Up nullifies greatly, if you're trying to activate it with Uragaan armour set bonus, because that's usually just all kinds of awful for efficiency.

If you have the decoration though, by all means drop it into any build that has a block function. While switching the deco out for something else I.E a Jumping Jewel is usually more efficient when fighting things like a Kulu Ya-Ku or whatever, it's just soooo much effort doing that, and remembering what monsters you need it for and what monsters you don't...so yeah.

Mandatory slot into your set, then forget about it forever more, I say.

It's just so nice turtling up and not caring instead of panicking when an Elder Dragon decides it's going to nova or nuclear bomb blast or whatever you anyway, right?

Yes since guard up enable you to guard against strong attack like Teo's nova
Otherwise you'll be overcooked if you tried to turtle yourself against it

Yes. Against certain monsters only of course.

I just leave it in my main build out of laziness.

For Velkhana, it's a must. You can't block most of the breath attacks, and this ♥♥♥♥♥ breathes a hell lot. For Teo, not really. Just sheath and dive. For Luna, maybe. It's hard to avoid her Big Flap. For Kirin, debatable, as the Line Lightning can go crisscross now, and Kirin is actively moving to adjust aim during it. Namielle, hmm, maybe.

The enhanced power guard does allow you to go without Guard Up for most fights. You can use the power guard to guard against slow, unblockable attacks, such as Teostra's super nova. However, Guard Up is still necessary for some monsters with fast, unblockable attacks, due to the delay on the power guard. (I'm looking at you, Velkhana, with your ice breath spam.)

If you were lucky enough to get a Shield decoration, you might as well just make it part of your standard set. It's only 1 two-slot.

it depends imo, since Guard Up effect is proc when you stay in powered guard state for a while anyway (not that long to be useless, but not that short to be overpowered)

I don't think anything is necessary, but having it (and using it wisely) is definitely not a bad thing.

To clarify on what TwoArmedMan said, using Power Guard for about three seconds will activate Guard Up so you can block normally unblockable attacks. Once the shield flashes, it's active.

Oof, I don't have the deco for guard up. I guess I'll make a crappy uragaan build and a less crappy other one for now. Thanks for the help.

You can also get it on the Bulwark Charm too, if you don't want to use Uragaan armour.

The problem is my only offensive skill right now (besides getting as much crit chance as possible) is offensive guard, and I have that as my charm atm. Luckily I only need 2 uragaan pieces, so I have the legs and arms for guard+4. I'll prob just live with it till I get the deco from steamworks

Well, I wish you luck on your decoration farming, then! :crystal:

I would say no, it is not.

Power guard aside, Quick sheath, Evade extender are very useful with GL. Just sheathe and run away for the AOE moves. Will also help you to heal faster. The attacks that require guard+5 are very few. You don't have to block everything.

That would be great, if the OP was using a GL.

Still useful input on a playstyle for Lance. However, I'm using vaal set bonus and recovery speed, so I don't plan on putting my weapon away very often. Prob not optimal damage, but I'm bad at the game so the less I die the more damage I do lol
