Elitism in MHW
So, I've been playing monster hunter for a very *very* long time. I have always preferred online play to the solo portion of previous games, because to me, playing with and meeting new people has always been one of the more important aspects to the game; it's what I enjoy about Monster Hunter.

And, man, the elitism in monster hunter has always been the bane of my existence. A stain on a, compared to other games, relatively fantastic online experience.

At a time, I pretty bad at monster hunter, as I've been playing the series since I was about 10 years old. I have easily poured thousands of hours into the series, and have grown immensely in skill. I peaked around the time of mh3u on the Wii U, and started to seriously burn out on the series by mh4u.

After 3u, I R E F U S E D to play online with randoms, because the experience was almost entirely ruined by elitism. And, inb4 "well if you get gud you wont have a problem" you either didn't play MH back then, or lived in a tight bubble, because people back then would leave your quest because you carted once off of an unfortunate stun, or becuase you wore the wrong armor set. I always made it a point to join lower level hunters on days that I didn't want to try super hard, and just wanted to chill out online, and give people advice on armor builds, or just help them with their key quests and urgents. At some point, some CB/DB meta user would join in, kill all of the monsters in less than 3 minutes with their G Rank DPS sets, drop a "yw" in the chat, and then ragequit when the noobs died to an attack they hadn't seen before.

MHW completely shattered the feeling of burnout I had during mh4u, and a big part of that is because a grand majority of the worst elitists stayed on cross/gen u, because "MHW is too easy."

Well, I have a group of friends that I play with regularly, that are much older than I am, and as such, aren't as reflexive when they play games. I generally do carry them quite a bit, and they always thank me to heavens end for my help with stuff they get stuck on, but they always do aspire to be better players, because like literally everyone else who plays this game, elitist or not, they find this game fun.

I've slowly realized that I don't have fun being a part of the community passed playing with this very specific group of friends. People on SOS usually aren't all that bad, as most of the elitist jerks on MHW play solo for that minimum timer max dps solo speedrun potential, but hot damn if you guys haven't started to infest the forums for this game.

TLDR; Elitists are the one glaring bad thing about monster hunter. I was happy to leave many of them behind with the emergence of MHW. Stop this ♥♥♥♥ before it starts.

P.S.

I know most people reading this don't fall into the elitist category, and the ones that do read this are more than likely beyond reason, but I wanted to rant, because almost every thread I have opened has had that *one guy* in the replies. Trust me, it's a slippery slope.

But you shouldn't go into an online game with incredibly thin skin.
So what if they critique your build, your performance, or whatever else? They're just randos on the internet. There's millions of those.

Your need to vent is understandable, but appeals against toxicity don't work. The really toxic people don't read/mind them and the ones who do, aren't the problem to begin with.

Errr, Only forums of MHW are full of elitism.

The game itself is fine. Also huge problem back in day was the fact you had cliques.

You will find ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who will just post and call rank because theyve played the game longer than you have or have better times or just because they think they're good. I wonder if they're reading this as we speak...
You're free to ♥♥♥♥ around solo or with your friends, when you play with others they would generally like it if you didn't cart their quests because you are a moron. This game doesn't revolve around you, especially SOS doesn't revolve around your puny little mind. When playing as a member of a team, please be courteous enough to at least act like one. Noone gives people ♥♥♥♥ over mistakes or unfortunate events, it hasn't happened in MHW and it never had happened in previous games. And I can tell you this without playing the previous games, because that's just not how people are like in ANY game. So the problem here is not them, but you.

I don't disagree.

This. I played a ton of online in Tri on Wii, 3U on WiiU and World on PS4 and never encountered any kind of elitism ingame. Actually, I made a lot of friends in 3U because the ingame community was so chill. That was one of the appeals of having a hub based multiplayer imo. (I still prefer SOS though).
The discussion boards are obviously a different case but they are pretty toxic in general no matter what game. Should have seen GameFaqs around World's release on PS4.

I genuinely have had a different experience, but maybe I have just been unfortunate. I like SOS, but boy do I miss Loc Lac as the end-all-be-all hub. Most of the in-game elitism I've seen was between mhfu on ad-hoc party, and 3u and 4u, Tri wasn't really that bad. I know that the discussion boards are a different case, as that's what I'm mainly discussing for world in my thread. I have been an active lurker on MH online groups, forums, gamefaqs, etc for a very long time, and this is the way it's always been. I just really don't want to see it get to what its like in say, the guild hall group on facebook, where the mods publicly shame people for using health boost or autoguard skills in their posted sets, or as you mentioned, the gamefaqs threads where people roast you for not knowing how to perfect chainstun alatreon with para-hammer while your team cluster spams.

I'm sure they probably did read it, but I'm not going to grace a "you're wrong because I don't like what you have to say" comment with a real reply. I ranted a lot about elitists just now, but trolls are another topic :P

I find funny how this thread didnt blow up with elitists jumping at you yelling about their glass cannon sets and etiquette but understandable since most elitists were already tucked in bed by their mommies by this hour

A lot of games have elitism once you get really into those games. It tends to stand out more the more you play a certain game. I've seen it everywhere.
DaBa Feb 4, 2020 @ 2:57am
Oh the irony... You're acting like the elitist yourself here. You immediately try to brand anybody who thinks this game is too easy or doesn't want toplay with randoms or people who aren't as good as them. This is how they enjoy to play the game, what's your problem with that? You're suggesting that their way is wrong, and yours is right, that's literally what Elitism is...

Just play the game and let others play the game however they like it. Like most of us here do. You don't need to fight straw man elitists.
