Sword n Shield, How do people seem to instantly backstep?
So I've basically mained SnS for the majority of my time playing MHW and I've gotten fairly comfortable with it. When I see speed run videos, I usually see them use the backstep pretty much instantly, but from what I imagine they do it from guard. I've gotten used to waiting for the "shield up" animation before inputting the backstep because I always get a guard slash if I try to input faster(trying to input the backstep command as soon as I press guard or before the static guarding animation happens).

Just wondering if there's any trick to it or if they're just inputting it so fast that I don't even see the guarding animation happen.

I've played enough to not really need to do this because my slower way of doing it is functionally the same, I'm just curious.

Holding back and pressing the shield attack? I think.

Probably this. I don't play SnS much but fiddling about in the training area: So long as the guard is input before back+attack you can backstep. the timing can be tight enough that it looks like you skip guarding almost completely.

you mean the backhop after making an attack?

IIRC to do it without attack input, you need to be holding guard.

Guard, hold back, let it rip.

Multiple ways

Guard+Back+B(Hold) is a back step.

Hit Y Then Back+B(Hold is a backstep.)

Hit anything and then back+B(Hold) is a back step etc.

There is a setting in your options, its a camera setting, setting it to type 1/2 changes the orientation of your button presses based on direction of your camera. (pretty sure its this, i havent changed it in a long time)

setting 2 takes a bit to get used to the orientation but it allows you to backstep super easy by just using the same direction to hit back every time.

I've experienced that doing the back+b input too fast after guarding just makes me guard slash, but doing it at the end of the guard animation works almost all the time.

Maybe there's an animation lock at the end that lets you buffer a backstep with much less rushed input.

Man I totally forgot about instant backstep from block. Thanks to this thread I did it earlier. So many little moves to keep up with compared to the olden days of Unite now. I love sns ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Yeah I tend to tuse the y combo as a base for that, seems to be more easy then jsut guard.

you can also backstep from roll

Press b RIGHT before you pull back on the joystick. It's way easier then pulling back first, as sometimes you end up turning slightly and just doing a guard slash. There's a slight animation buffer at the start of guard slash that lets you backstep pretty easy once you get used to the timing.
