Raw Dmg focus vs. Elemental dmg focus IG
I've been maining IG since beta vanilla MHW and I can never get a straight answer on what damage I should be focusing on. Is it purely just choice or is one viably better to focus on than the other?

From what I've been told for Iceborne, element is better, but you still focus on raw damage. Your insect glaive choices will be those with the highest raw and matching element, and all element boosting is done via augments. Here's a meta compilation album: https://imgur.com/a/sUZsdau

If a mosnter is weak agaisnt a specific elemnt and you stack it to the max on a weapon that has a high stat for that elemnt it will beat out Raw.
I have a SNS that i can stack ice elent up to around 750 My perfect rush combo deals over 1000 damage easly vs mosnter weak to ice.

Wepons that have a high Affinity are also better Raw then elemnt as crits only bost raw damage. Elmental damage is same regardless of crits or not and even exactly the same regardless of the movie you use.

That is why you run critical element. I tried doing elemental for the lance using Masters Touch and Critical Element. The pieces I was using though were tight for slots so I couldn't put many skills in. They still never did as much damage as my blast lance though, which I managed to fit all the skillls I wanted in. Maybe elemental just isn't for lance.

Element is actually the meta for lance, but it's just that you don't build for element at all. Since the pokes have a 0.7x elemental multiplier, building for raw is better, then letting the natural element push it over what a pure raw can do.

I suppose I could just adjust my blast build without crit element and just put in the elemental charm I need. I always assumed you need crit element to make elemental good.

Essentially it can be broken down to how fast and frequently you can land hits. For a weapon that has somewhat slow swing speed like a greatsword or hammer, raw damage tends be better, but there are exceptions and situations that does not make this true.

The way elemental damage works is based on procs, not every hit is also an elemental hit. Some debuffs have a semi-hidden stat called Build Up. The game does mention BU occasionally, but not often. Elemental damage also has a form of BU but it happens much more frequently than most debuff based procs.

Hope that helps.

Yeah that helps me understand how it works a bit more. I always thought elemental damage was kind of like a consistent "true damage" that ignores a monsters raw defenses. I'm still trying to figure out the math and science of this game since the PS2 original XD
