You can spot it from two areas, I believe Area 6 and Area 14 are some of the easiest. Everything else is, as you say, just Zoomaster, Clear + Night, and bucketloads of RNG.
Maybe consider petting your Poogie before setting out for the night, too.
Currently hunting down a Rotten Moly, but the little bastard just isn't spawning at all. Spent the last four hours on this, waiting until dusk / dawn and then checking / reloading / checking, etc. Elusive little guy, I'll give him that. Starting to lose hope!
Gotta catch the Molys next too!
In order to have an easier time with the rare moly hunt make sure you:
1. Eat for zoomaster (as usual)
2. Rank up the Guiding Lands area you are searching to level 7 (or whatever the current max cap is on PC)
3. Search BOTH of the spawn points in the zone you are looking for.
If you do all of this you should see a rare moly every 3-4 times you search that zone. You can max out 3 areas to level 7 at a time which gives you access to half of the rare molys. Then clear and level the other 3 zones or join someone's else's leveled areas and search.
To reiterate, RARE MOLY spawn chance IS affected by BOTH Guiding lands level AND Zoomaster food skill.
Spent another three hours getting him to spawn again.
