Solo > SOS flares
Simply because majority of the MHW community is full of dumb idiots, that refuse to prepare well for the hunt, and completely ignore any chat in-game. I have a few examples. The quest "We three kings". I join in, cause I see three high HR and MR players, thinking that it might make this quest easier and faster. And what happens? Two of those players are fighting the Kirin with visibly fire protective armor, that has minus lightning resistances, cart twice, despite their supposed knowledge of Kirin's moveset, since they had to fight him at least once before getting to MR, and immediately disconnect. I was stuck there with the only reasonable player, and we almost didn't make that hunt, simply because we were left with half dead Kirin and two other Elder Dragons at full HP, and all of their HP was quadruppled. Great. Another example being the Shara Ishvalda hunt. You can only get two setpieces and no weapons from it, should you decide not to farm it's tenderplates. With that knowledge, I decided to join into the quests that were marked as optional, thinking, that people play those for the same reason as me - to farm it's set - therefore, they needed to break it's head twice to get the tenderplates. Even so, I went ahead and wrote them in the chat, that they only need to focus it's head, or else they'll kill it before breaking it twice. And what happened? One ♥♥♥♥♥♥ with Insect Glaive continuosly flew around it, striking every part of the monster that came into contact with him, the others seemingly ignored what I wrote, as everytime we managed to knock Shara down, they started to attack the part that was closest to them. And after the unsuccessful head break, they even posted an emoticon with thumbs up. Yeah, very successful hunt morons, now try to build something from Shara without tenderplates. And I could continue on and on. I personally main dual blades, though I am not afraid to switch to hammer or switch axe, when in need to break some specific monster part, and I never carted once in any multiplayer hunt. Now granted, I didn't play multiplayer in Iceborne that much, but I also made sure to kill every monster solo at least twice, to learn it's patterns so as not to fail someone else's hunt. So anyway. If you are using your lucky vouchers, want to farm some specific monster part, or even if you want to do Ancient Leshen or Behemoth fight, that are heavily multiplayer oriented, you'll only do better to try to solo it and use the SOS as the last possible resort. Cause unfortunately, majority of MHW community are casuals, or simply lazy people with zero effort to try and focus on the game and it's mechanics.

In iceborne multiplayer scaling will adjust in real time, if you started with 4 players and 3 leave, you will be scaled down to single player, no need to worry about that. But yeah normally Solo is always better because you cannot blame anyone besides you XD.

Really? I thought that was not the case, because it took us 48 minutes out of 50 to finish both of the remaining elder dragons and half dead Kirin. When I soloed this quest, all in all it took me around 35 minutes.

Well then maybe either you have a problem or the other guy have a problem.

https://www.monsterhunter.com/update/mhw-steam/us/

You can check that on that web.

Quest difficulty will now scale in real-time according to the number of players in the quest.

Ok, glad to hear that, next time I'll try to convince the carting idiots to leave the quest and let me finish it myself.

Quest do scale down when someone leaves. Perhaps yoj were afraid and played too defensively which equates to a lower dps and much longer quest time?

I've had this happen and even so managed to finish the quest in 28 minutes with not optimal weapons.

If you're talking about hr50 tempered mirin, if they are low HR, they most likely never fought it

SOS flares > Solo

Look up any Mon Hun trailer and you'll see a group always.

Group hunting is part of the experience.

I've done a lot of SOS use and the majority all worked out really well. Joining other games is a bit different. People carted here and there on the tougher monsters like Behemoth. However, tempered monsters were never much an issue. There were problems with things like Luna and Teo's supernova wiping out some unluckiest health bar, but the majority of the time it was because they didnt have proper time to sheath and run. Which I can forgive.

The only trouble with SOS I've had is the "foreign name" types. Dont know if its chinese or Japanese so I won't single out. However, every time one of these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joined a hunt they NEVER appeared. They would join and just stand there eating ♥♥♥♥ while I did the hunt. This has happened multiple times to the point it's like they just want to keep the difficulty increased.

One prick had the nerve to join our 3 man hunt, wait out the monster death, then show up to carve. We just kept flinging him into the air(CB, GS, Hammer) and kept him from anywhere near the monster. To which he wrong some more foreign script and we just told him to get dunked on.
