Is poison build a thing?
I'm a hammer main, but I was going to go Twin Swords to change things up. With its fast attack I figure statuses like Poison is viable. Is it?

Poison has a damage cap unfortunately, and should be something thats a byproduct of a strong weapon, not the focus

poison damage does not scale and is balanced for low rank.

It's only benefit is damage (unlike, say, blast which breaks parts), and you will do more damage building for element or raw.

Poison is the weakest of the ailments.

Its damage is low in comparison. And is really dependant on monster weakness.

Para opens up big damage windows, sleep opens up bombing and environmental damage boosts and blast breaks parts, does as much damage as poison in most cases and has fewer outright immune or resistant monsters.

Two of the things that made poison powerful in previous games arent in MHW.

1. Its status build up could be done while the monster was suffering from poison. So could chain the effect.

2. It stopped monsters from using certain attacks.

Poison is really bad. If you want good ailments go for paralysis, sleep or blast if you want a dmg ailment. Stay away from poison. The only weapon with poison you should use is the Rathian Gunlance and just because it's good in its own, the poison dmg is just a kind of useless bonus so it's ok. Just don't build for poison.

We need this to come back. I don't understand why they stripped poisom from those effects.
Should have at least made poison do exhaust damage per tick. Coulda tired out the monster with constant application and would make sense that poison of all status effects, is able to do this.

Maybe if exhaust element didn't existed.

This is still in the game.

And to answer OP's question, poison is a good supplement to your main manage to monsters that have 3* weakness against it, but it's not worth making a build for it (with e.g. Poison Attack).
