Good general high rank greatsword for scrubs?
Newly high rank, just tore the pink rathian a new one and ripped its flesh off for later use. What greatsword should I try for? Right now I'm thinking the giant jawblade (easy and further stuff), though the Jagras hacker II also looks good.

I use mostly the bone armor set for the attack buff, no fancy elemental♥♥♥♥♥♥yet.

When the event comes back, "Wyvern Ignition" is the strongest Greatsword in the MHW, hands down

Did you miss the "newly high rank" or "for scrubs" part.

I'm like hunter rank 15.

The event quest requires HR 8. You'll only need to run it 5 times at most to craft the weapon.

When does the event come back then?
End January.

Until then, really just grind for armor; HR Odogaron is p good for getting through the High Rank part of story

For now just use jagras great sword

The Jagras Hacker II has those two extra slots that eventually turn into lv3 slots, which gives you a good deal of freedom for later builds. I personally don't find it very aesthetically pleasing, though.

And yeah, grab that Wyvern Ignition whenever you're able to. It's pretty much the best greatsword (whenever it's available).

dumb question but doesnt the fire damage negate its full damage on fire resisting monster?

It doesn't have fire damage. It has hidden fire damage. Big difference. Hidden means it doesn't do fire damage by default, and you can use Elementless to get +10% raw damage with it.

S'all good. Everyone learns the mechanics eventually.

On the topic of hidden element damage, you'll need the "Free Element/Ammo Up" skill in order to unlock it. You have to keep in mind that "Free Element/Ammo Up" is a three-stage skill, and by not maxing it out you only unlock one- to two-thirds of that hidden element value.

Three skills to fully unlock a hidden element vs +10% increased raw with a weapon that heavily favors raw damage, the former is simply not worth it.
