Monster Hunter: World
Lore behind which elders are aggressive?
Teostra, Val Hazaak, and Kushala are all non-aggressive to the player.
Kirin only gets mad if you stay right in front of it.
Luna bears absolute hatred at first sight.

Nergi boi is a standard boi.

Any lore on why it's like this?

Its not just elder dragons the other monsters will ignore the hunter as well.

The older games did have more monster lore out there. Like Diablos who is incredibly territorial or DevilJho which just sees everything as food.

Its an animal thing as a whole though so its not unrealistic. Elder dragons tend to be so above everything that they really dont take notice. Unless they are agressive by nature.

Notice that Teo wont really engage the hunter but when Lunastra is around he too becomes hyper agrresive.
To make them seem more like animals. They're notagressive. I walk past casually walk past Anjanath all the time. It all depends which area you encounter the mosnter in.

The Elder dragons like to bask and and can't be bothered with you insignificant humans most of the time.

Ifyou want some lore explainations, look at Lao Shang Lung. It's going to destroy the human town not because it is being aggressive, but because the humans just so happened to accidentally build a city in teh path of it's 1000 year migration route. (And therefore it must die.)

In general, the idea is that the elders where here first and don't really know what to make of the humans. All of the conflict with them can be explained by some kind of misunderstanding. (And therefore they must die.)
Another example is Cadeus in MH3.

Its not setting out to destroy the island its just that by moving around and blasting tunnels it is. And thus must once again be driven off.

Same with Jhen Morah. It hunts the desert so stuff skimming the sand is clearly food. Also its the size of a small mountain so its not like its going to notice the little hunter by its tail when it rolls over.
The Elders in World are rather old, they go to the Recess to die. We know from previous games that Elders are extremely intelligent; the Kushala that attacked Dundorma in 4U recognized the Ace Leader and attacked, then fled when the Master showed up, it was the same Kush that attacked and ripped off Master's arm. Most of them are rather docile due to them feeling that theyre on top of the food chain
I should add: Lunastra are female teostras, and even tho theyre based off of manticores, in MHW theyre winged lions, and female lions are much more agressive than males ever could hope to be
Kirin are based off of an actual myth called the kirin, and theyre just ♥♥♥♥♥ as a whole, which makes sense as historically, kirin were just giraffes
