Rathalos set (high rank) and dodogama cane got me through my first fight with him

i fought him while wearing bazelgeuse's armor =)

tbh if you want to build to your weapon go ahead. i thought that was a little premature because most of the early HR armor has no jewel slots and won't stand up to the end game sets very well.

i just went with the set that had a lot of defence and some skills that might help. =x

You have to build a transition set for the Elder Dragons.

Unless you are at the dodge every thing stage of skill.

You wont have all the skills you need but they arent that tough as a whole so it's even if the skills arent maxed it gives you a start.

All I can suggest is getting the Ingot gauntlets, they give two levels of Health Boost which is basically the best defensive skill in the game. There's also a really good headpiece but I forgot when you get access to it sadly. Otherwise equipping Odogaron for everything else but the head is a good offensive set to start.

I made it through the story with the crappy Zorah armor and the iron tree blast glaive. As long as you upgrade your armor there's really nothing to worry about.

4 piece Odogaron for Protective Polish since IG can have trouble keeping blue sharpness at that point.
